I can't tbh. All you are doing is creating glycogen (not that much mind you) when you already have loads left over. That knackered feeling has nothing to do with you running low on usable energy.

Its a placebo as far as i'm concerned but when the test is as much mental as it is physical placebos can and do make people faster.

Many people can deplete their glycogen stores doing a half marathon.

I'm just in from 10 very hilly miles. Awful! As I type this I'm sitting in an ice bath trying not to think of the pain!!! It took me 2 hours to do 10 miles. Thank god it's done! Think I will pick a slightly less hilly route next Sunday.

Where live there are hills in every direction! My house is high up and out in the countryside so no matter what road I take I get hills. Some routes are worse than others though today's was particularly up and down. Some of the steep ones I had to walk as my legs couldn't manage but I pushed on. My theory is its like putting money in the bank doing hard training. Maybe I should try a flatter route? Is the half marathon course very hilly?

No, there's a few hills on the back, end the worst is where you enter through the Kilmainham gate up to the top of Military Hill, a few miles later and you have a half mile long hill, not steep but consistent.

Zooming I'm surrounded by hills too but I think it's great - when you get to what other runners think are massive hills they're well within your range. I did the Clonmel half today and was waiting for the hills that everyone was dreading but they were nothing compared to the hill outside my house!

I did a lot of my DCM '11 training on hills. It's great for building up stamina and strength but won't necessarily make you faster.

Also, hard training should always be complemented with recovery, whether it's a slower run the next day, or a day off, or crosstraining.

I'm following Hal Higdon novice 1 plan, the only difference is I'm lengthening the Sunday runs a bit earlier, his plan asks for runs on tue/wed/thurs/Sunday and I'm sticking to that pretty much. The midweek runs are slow! This week it's 5 miles tue, 3 wed and 5 on Thursday then the long run on Sunday. I'm hoping I will get round this half marathon!!! But as Hal says.. Trust the training

I think there is hills only ever at the zoo end of the park, maybe someone else could confirm this? if your running hills and it takes you 2 hours to do it that's good going

No, the hills are at the other end of the park from the zoo. They're not that bad at all. None of them will take more than one or two minutes.

Sorry phrased it wrong, I was only at Dublin Zoo so couldn't comment on the rest of the park

Why are you so worried about finishing last?

About 6000 I think. Busy, but not insane. (If you can run even half of it you won't be anywhere near last)

I think there are 3 waves? I'm DEFINITLY going to start in the last wave, no point starting with the super fast to have them hurtle past me! In answer to your question isn't everyone afraid of finishing last?? I've never done any sort of marathon before either so it will be an education. My plan is to start nice and easy and make sure I heve enough in the tank to finish....

If I start in the last wave and If I pass people at least I know it was down to me , I'm sure some people will walk/run it, If you are capable of doing 10 miles with out stopping you should pass a few people

    3 waves (and it's a half marathon :) )
Pretty sure the waves will be under 100 minutes, 100-120 minutes, and over 120 minutes.

Just a query for those that have done it before. Is this half marathon harder or easier than doing the first half of the Dublin marathon route? It seems much more hilly than parts of the actual Dublin marathon

Did DCM last year and half marathons in 2010 and last year. I think this year's route for half is same as 2010 route.

I would say that the half marathon is more difficult than the first half of actual DCM. I guess it is a matter of opinion though.

DCM starts at the level of the river, climbs slowly to the level of the park, drops down to cross the river and climbs again immediately afterwards.

The half is fairly flat for the first half, then drops down to the level of the river, and climbs up again soon afterwards.

So there's more climbing in DCM, but what hills there are in the half are in the last few miles.

I suppose it is the last climb of the half that lingers in my memory most :) rather than longer gradual drags of DCM although come to think of it there was nasty hill at ballyfermot I think(after the tunnel) and Heartbreak hill of course at back of UCD.

Safe to say though that the hills in the half are good preparation for DCM and people should try and incorporate some hills into their LSRs in training.

Over the bug I caught wasn't running for four days, Did just over 9 miles today. I'm sure you will pass people, fairly certain there will be many people running to quick at the start and will not be able to continue that pace. I'd say it happens every year.

    Oops!:o

Memory is obviously going. I thought I read somewhere that it was. Maybe I am mixing it up with DCM as I think that changed slightly last year cos of roadworks in the park.

    Thanks for the correction.

No bother, the DCM route is the same as 2010 but the half course is new with spells outside the park just for laughs :D

Usually 20 mins on bike and some weights, mostly upper body

I use cycling as my cross training, I do about 17 miles. When you start cycling, you’re using muscles in your legs and core that complement the muscles used for running, making you stronger, more efficient, and yes — faster.

    Crap! Crap! Crap!
What an AWFUL 5 miles, walked half of it. Lead legs, nauseous and generally I felt terrible. It's making me question this whole thing. On Tuesday I had a great 5 miles in 56 mins and felt happy. Today... Rubbish
