Costa Concordia for scrapping ?

According to todays Irish Independent ( not the most reliable source I know ) the Costa Concordia is to raised at a cost of $300 million and towed to a nearby dockyard for scrapping.

Surely she is repairable ? While no doubt a serious overhaul/refit would be called for , scrapping does seem a very radical thing on such a ' young ' vessel ?

Is it really that severely damaged ?

How long will she be sitting there, everything underwater will be ruined and everything above will go mouldy with the damp. That's all the fixtures and fittings and probably wiring that'd need to be replaced, plus the engines and other major components. Couple that with what the stigma and fear that'd always be attached to it and it's basically not worth it. Doubt it'd be convertible to anything else either...

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest - anyway is not the usual practice for raised ships to be sold to new owners and re-named ?

No doubt to get it back into service would be a big job but look at the battleships raised at Pearl Harbour , USS West Virginia hit by up to 8 torpedoes yet saw action later in the war.

All the expensive equipment and engines have been destroyed so she's just a hulk. To strip it out and refit would probably cost more than a new ship.

According to Sundays Financial Times, the salvage contractors announced plans to "start work this month on the unprecedented task of refloating the Concordia." The article did not say what would happen to the ship once it was refloated.

Ships are usually scrapped in SE Asia, would they allow scrapping in Europe with all the H&S??

I had supposed that if they did right her and get her floating, they'd either tow it to the Far East to the scrappers, or failing that cut it into sections, tow it to deep water and get shot of her.

I also thought it would make a fine decent dive wreck, but then you'd attract the sort irresponsibles that get themselves lost on the Andrea Doria.

Turkey also does lots of large scale breaking of ships. It looks like this one will be chopped on scene though.

Afaik she is presently being prepared to be refloated some time around January . She will then be scrapped elsewhere

some ships are condemned to become wrecks, like a US aircraft carrier not so long ago which can foster new coral reefs as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0RyFnoFgyQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player however MARPOL regulations must be complied with and thus strip practically all materials from her. With the extensive hotel materials onboard it makes more sense to break her up as some items might be able to be recycled in more environmentally friendlier ways

I just watched a programme on this now, could steel plates not have been welded into place over the breaches? then drive down deep into the sea bed, to stop it sliding further and so that it can be pulled upright. then get a very tugs with ridiculous steel cables to pull her upright? Is that idea in any way practical? I wonder what if any other ideas were proposed...

it's quite a cool photo though, it'll be a very interesting image once she's floating yet having the clear divide of 'new' and 'old' almost.

Looks like a complete change of plan now, they're going to load her onto the semi-submersible ship, the Dockwise Vanguard. Perhaps how that they've found the remains of the two missing persons, they're going for the cheaper option (allegedly still costing USD 30 million!) ?
