So its the end of the world, the dead rising from the grave, cats and dogs living together, human sacrifice etc, and you are all set to bug out BUT you have a little time and an amazingly well stocked kitchen. If you could choose any four herbs or spices in a double fistful sized quantity, which would you choose? Excluding the obvious sugar, salt and pepper of course.

My seasoning and reasoning would be:
    • Basil, it makes boiled boots smell like bliss.
    • Garlic, will overwhelm any taste and I like it too.
    • Curry powder, same reason and it goes well with the two above.
    • Cloves.

mixed herbs (I know im cheating) for flavoring meat etc
garam masala for a nice curry flavor
cayenne pepper for spicy flavor but with a bit more depth then chilli
garlic because it goes into most of the things I cook

thyme and oregano. I've stashed a bunch of pasta so I might as well season it

    Cloves (medicinal and tasty)
Cumin seed, my favourite flavour for chilli and I presume I 'll be growing chillis:)
More pepper, can't ever have too much black pepper
Garlic? Maybe but should have this fresh
Saffron, most expensive spice in the world, can use it as a trade item.

    Turmeric - medicinal and tasty
Cumin seed - can't do stir fry without it
Curry powder - makes anything taste at least acceptable
Asafoetida - a little goes a very long way, tastes and smells great and will be impossible to find

Anything else I would expect to grow. Currently I have fennel, thyme, sage, rosemary and chives.

Hunger might be the best sauce, but a few well chosen herbs and spices can make things sooooo much better.

    Cloves - oral anesthetic.
cayenne pepper (or Paprika/Chilli) - makes pepper spray.
Garlic - if I can take a whole clove - rodents / pests hate it so you can ward them off with it,easy to grow and generally great for you.

I think I'd have to have a few bottles of Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce.

If I was at a loose end I might even try and make it for myself.

    Garlic
    Curry powder
    Italian Mixed herb
    Chinese 5 spice

    Are the last two cheating?

Tabasco and Worcester sauce while not herbs as such are very high on my priority.

Not unless you can seperate out the individual spices in the mix! :D

All condiments are welcome. The thinking generally is that while most people won't be able to carry enough bulk food to last very long, they might be able to make what they find a lot more edible with a little foresight, which can make a big difference. Not for nothing do most hot spices originate in hot countries, where food can spoil quickly. Plus, small scale trade goods.

Chillis - very easy, windowsill in 3l pots, can be plagued with aphids.
    Peppercorns - not a clue

I grow chillies every year in the greenhouse, I have also found they are plagued with aphids but a bit of a spray sorts that. It's surprising what you can grow here on a sunny window sill or greenhouse, my biggest surprise was sweetcorn, not very cost effective in terms of space used but a revelation in terms of taste.

Use the chillis to kill the aphids?
    Organic pesticide: Garlic Chilli spray

    8-10 chillies finely sliced
4 cloves garlic crushed and cut roughly
    1 Tablespoon soap flakes
    1 Litre boiling water
Combine in a glass jar and set aside for 24 hours. Strain and pour into a spray bottle.
    Use within 2 weeks
