The Allingham Arts Festival is Ballyshannon is running a competition for short stories up to 3,000 words, and poetry.
    http://allinghamartsassociation.com/competitions-2013/

Entries are free but it doesn't say what the prizes are, that I can see anyway. Closing date on website says October 17th but entry form says Friday 11th October so best aim for the earlier date.

They sound dodgy as hell. Won't name themselves, won't name the prize, take anonymous submissions unedited in any language and offer "financial assistance" to writers who haven't finished their piece yet.
Simply, the prize we offer is the chance to put your writing to the test and secure your future as a writer. We offer financial assistance to writers without even requiring a completed work. That's right...believe it or not our writers will be given financial assistance based solely on their ability to impress us. That is the case whether your talents are fully developed or completely raw, because we will be investing in your potential.

Got distracted by this while trying to read one of the stories shortlisted for the Irish Times Legends of the Fall competition:

Competition name: Davy Byrnes Short Story Award
    URL: http://stingingfly.org/content/davy-byrnes-short-story-award-2014
Eligibility: previously unpublished short story in English by Irish citizens or writers resident in the 32 counties
Deadline for Submissions: Monday February 3rd 2014
    Formats Accepted: TBA
    Entry Fee: €10
Prize(s): €15,000 for the winner, and 5 runners up get €1,000 each

It's not open for entries until December, which gives plenty of time for brainstorming!

Forgive my ignorance if this is very well known, but is this trustworthy? I haven't seen it mentioned on the thread yet?

Fish annual short story competition is well-recognised internationally and has many published authors in its alumni.

This year's RTE Radio Francis MacManus short story competition is now open for entries.
    http://static.rasset.ie/documents/radio1/francis-macmanus-entry-form-2014.pdf

Because this competition is for radio and all the shortlisted stories are recorded and broadcast it is important to stay in the word count and to think about how it will sound when read out loud.

I generally don't trust entry fees.

I generally don't trust entry fees.

With a €20,000 prize fund a €10 entry doesn't seem unreasonable, but I wouldn't like to pay much more.

    Looks like I'm entering.

I found out tonight that it's only run every 5 years. So... yeah.

I found something on my harddrive that isn't terrible and is complete. Going to spend tomorrow making it better and get that February 3rd post mark on it on Monday!

Did anyone get confirmation regarding their entry to the Davy Byrne competition. I expected to receive a confirmation of some sort that entry had been received but nothing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 107 ✭✭Kayly

No, received no confirmation, but wasn't expecting to I suppose. It's the first one I've entered.

Yeh my first too, but it would be nice if they had let us know especially since they're asking us not to enter the story into other competitions. I posted it on the Friday before it was due but I presume if it hadn't made the deadline they would sent it back or something.

You usually don't get confirmation. Did they take payment? That will let you know if they got it.

I used a postal order. Is there any way I can check?

It doesn't really matter, when I don't win I'll just assume they didn't get it
