Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think we could do with a new flag.
We have Irish people who have no religion and of other religions beside the two christian denominations which the colours of the flag represent.
Maybe we should return to the Green Harp Flag, it was our flag for nearly 400 years.

    What do you think?

I'd like to see the stats for how many people who wake up on monday morning and want to change the world. Except they only manage to start a thread in after hours.

Thought our tricolour represented green nationalism, white peace and orange unionism, didn't know it represented the religious part.

I always preferred the plough and the stars myself, but the Green harp is well cool.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I never seen the green and orange as representative of the religious divide. It's Nationalist and Unionist the colours represent isn't it?

In fairness as long as the white gets represented from now on I'm happy enough.

First they came for the socialists...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

That's the Leinster flag, gold and green

The good people of Connacht, Munster and Ulster might have something to say about this

    Nothing to do with religion
    It's a republican tricolour
    Green does not equal Catholic

Sure the French have their own and they were vicious athiests who thought nothing of executing priests

A dirty grey flag with a half empty pint on it would better represent the Modern Ireland. And cover it with scribbles of English soccer team names. Then drag it around in the muck. Perfect!

Yeah, I was told this by the tour guide in Kilmainham Gaol..

It's a decent idea but far too effete.

It's about time The Jolly Roger made a comeback to the international flag scene.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,427 ✭✭✭Morag

Ok green reps nationalists (not all of whom are/were catholic) and the orange reps unionists (not all of whom are/were protestant).

How/why is blue the national colour?

Surely Lenister is blue, well make the lensiter flag the harp on a blue field and
we can go back to the green and gold.

    blue is Irelands traditional colour

    so Blue harp flag

I know there are a few flags with blue on them but I have never known blue to be the traditional colour? Got a link to anything on this? (Not saying your wrong, would just like a read at it)

I prefer the green harp flag myself and I doubt unionists care for their representation in the current flag or even know about it. Also I got caught in traffic behind one of their damned parades yesterday so to hell with them lets change it ><

Blue is the traditional colour of St. Patrick.

I think the Ireland football team (pre-partition of course) actually played in blue originally, believe it or not.

Lets call ourselves Hibernia officially too - land of winter suits the mood most people seem to be stuck in constantly.

I like the harp flag too btw but the jolly rodger also has a lot to say for itself...harp with swords?

    Royal blue and yellow

Where Tipperary leads, Ireland follows

fun fact: Greatest Irishman ever ruled from Cashel
Went to Dublin and got killed, typical!

He was most likely a slave trader and most definitely a massive fan of historical revisionism.

FYP. He studied in France for a time, but he wasn't French. He wasn't Welsh either.

Feck that tbh, and it was used to rep Ireland as part of the british empire.

No, that's what the romans called it. And there is no point in trying to go back to Eire or even Fál.

So we should have Gráinne Mhaol celebrated?
    I'd be down with that.

Given our present relationship with the EU our flag should be plain white:rolleyes:

henry VIII introduced the harp as a symbol of ireland. It was put on the anglo irish coins.

Ya sure before him didn't we have the three crowns of Munster on the Irish flag? He took it off cos he thought it symbolized the blessed trinity or something... So why don't we go back to the three crowns!

    Yes to both suggestions.
I never understood the current trend in countries flags these days, they should be more inventive and not look like something you can create in ms paint in 30 seconds

I was being sarcastic in response to changing it to the Harp. I don't want it changed.

I like the green harp. Also the four provinces flag, though I guess it's a bit fussy for a national flag. The tricolour has never done anything for me I must say. It's a terribly uncool flag for some reason.

    Word of the day: ''Saltire''.

You can't look to the past for a new flag. We should have a competition like the Google doodle ones to see who can come up with a new design.
