Eircoms refusal to publish names of non Broadband enabled Exchanges

As you may be aware Eircom has removed it's coverage map from the Eircom website and is now refusing to provide a list of the Exchanges that are not broadband enabled. The explanation given is that this is now confidential information that it does not have to make public. Although reps here will check on status of individual Exchanges they are prohibited from providing full list by their employers.  

However given that Eircom has a monopoly on the provision of fixed line broadband and the public money that was provided to Eircom is the refusal to provide this information justified? 

Approx 270 Exchanges were never enabled for basic broadband and on the basis that Eircom has no published plan or timetable to enable any more we can assume that the vast majority have been abandoned 

Among these are  Exchanges in the major cities. Reps here have confirmed that Eircom has reneged on it's 2007 promise to take all broadband orders in the five major urban areas and that there are no plans to enable any more Exchanges in the cities. 

The 2007 Upgrade program also  seems to have been abandoned.   The website listing exchanges that were to be enabled under the program has been shut down. 

Perhaps a rep here could provide a reasonable explanation and justification for the refusal to make the full list of non enabled Exchanges available?

That seems to be their position. And there probably is no legal requirement for them to reveal the names of the 270+ Exchanges that were never broadband enabled. However given that they have a monopoly in the provision of fixed lune broadband and the economic consequences of such widespread Broadband unavailability un this country there is a public interest argument for political pressure to force them to reconsider.

Sorted by County. Yes there are very few NON enabled exchanges in Donegal. The reason they are secret is because they never told anybody that some of them actually exist....like they are supposed to. See the Google Map link.

We have been over 5 years waiting for eircom to upgrade around 15 of the 270 odd exchanges on that list and they have not even apologised for the delay.

They will have some spare equipment after they execute the VDSL program in urban areas as they will swap out some ASL cabinets for faster gear.....meaning they might even finish Kilrickle and Calverstown 6-7 years after they promised they would.

But in fairness they said that most of the exchanges listed above were too small to upgrade.

At no stage did we confirm the above. Our statement was in fact

'In regards to this DSL deployment we have been advised that The Deployment Plan is subject to change as individual projects may be delayed / brought forward due to technical considerations. (The Rollout of NGB and Fibre, as demand for faster services increases, along with other infrastructure and technological changes since 2007 for example). I, Mark and Ant have made numerous enquiries on this issue and We have not received any notification that plans to continue deployment to provide DSL have been discarded. We have posted this response earlier on this thread.'


While the site you mention has been removed, and the replacement NGB site also, this is due to the total over haul and updating of our online pages and content.


As also stated on the same post ( link here) we do not have any further information. The reps here are happy and willing to provide any requested information and will do so once available. We will also advise when online sites have been brought back online.

A list of ADSL2 enabled exchanges that are NOT among the 300 odd NGB enabled exchanges would be nice Tony.

If you are on a roll then maybe a list of exchanges that are enabled but which do not supply greater than 3mbit broadband as well.

I assume that the Deployment Plan that you are referring to is the 2007 Deployment Plan that was rolled out with such fanfare and  under which Eircom promised to enable listed Exchanges for basic broadband. Unless you are insinuating that there is a second secret Deployment plan that Eircom has told nobody about.
You claim that this plan has not been abandoned . However
 
1.       Eircom promised to complete this plan by 2009.  It is now 2012.  
2.       Eircom has shut down the website that gave details of the progress of the Deployment Plan. Why would you do this if plan had not been abandoned.  You say that the plan is subject to change yet are unwilling or unable to say what these changes are.
3.       You are unable to say when or if any remaining  Exchanges listed in the Deployment Plan of five years ago will ever be enabled.  A timetable for enabling the Exchanges was available on the website which has now been shut down. But now for “operational reasons” information is no longer available.
 
 
It should also be noted that only 15 of the 270 non enabled Exchanges are covered in the Deployment Plan.  And of course you can’t say if there will ever be another Deployment plan to cover any of the these.

That is a totally unsatisfactory response. Either the rollout of fixd line broadband in Ireland
been abondended or it hasn't. If it hasn't, Eircom should be able to say when the next Exchange will be broadband enabled. Are there any plans to enable any of the Exchanges that Eircom promised to broadband enable by 2009 in the Deployment Plan. . Saying that like Manuel "you know nothing" is unacceptable.

There are 270 Exchanges listed above in the list provided by Spongebob that are not enabled for basic broadband. As an Eiecom rep you should be able to tell us if there are any plans to broadband enable any if these Exchanges. If you are unable to say the only logical inference is that the rollout of broadband has been abandoned.

eircom are happy to make available all information on current or past stages of our national roll out of eFibre, however, we do not have information on unplanned or work to be carried out outside of currently planned stages. Any information provided on unplanned ( where arrangements, work orders and licenses have been obtained) work would likely see changes to rol out dates.

Our interactive map clearly states that it is a quick guide to the areas where eFibre is rolling out.
"Click on a shaded area below. Please note: this map is for illustrative purposes only and not all homes within the eFibre area can avail of the service. To determine if eFibre is available at your home, please enter your home phone number or address into our interactive tool."
This map gives the best current overview of our current roll out plans. While it is true that there have been some delays in rolling this out in some areas, those areas earmarked for eFibre within this and current phases of the roll out will receive this service.

If I am understanding you correctly this is a tacit admission that the information on Eircoms site can be incorrect and false. But that those in affected areas will only be told this if they contact Eircom directly. If you told the truth on your official site they would not have to do so.

If I am understanding you correctly this is a tacit admission that the information on Eircoms site can be incorrect and false. But that those in affected areas will only be told this if they contact Eircom directly. If you told the truth on your official site they would not have to do so.
 
 


FACT: Eircom is deliberately and knowingly lying on its official site about the availability of broadband in Ireland.

it is obvious form your tone and constant misuse of the word "fact" that your real agenda here is to provoke and muddy actual issue.
A clear and honest response has been provided to your post. As has a system by which any customer can contact us for information on current and planned work in their area.
eircom have in fact overhauled its eFibre map on a number of occasions to provide the clearest guide to this roll out. The map is a guide, for specific information on an address, or for areas not yet included in our current map, just  Register your details here and we will contact you as soon as it becomes available.
As this is our final word on this matter I shall not be responding further to your posts on this.
However any customer who does wish further information on their area or address should feel free to use the channels I have outlined above. Or just PM us here and we can have this checked for you.
