Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Information on additional subjects

I'm getting very frustrated trying to find this on the Teaching Council website so it looks like I will have to email them for clarification (the reply will probably just be chunks of the information on the website pasted into an email ) so I was hoping someone else might be able to shed some light on this for me.

I am a newly qualified teacher (degree and PGDE in the bag) and have got some subbing experience this year but I only have one recognised teaching subject (psychology being the other subject completed in my degree). It goes without saying that this poses obvious problems when trying to secure a job so I would like to go back to college to do an additional subject(s) to enhance my employment prospects.

My first preference is to do the Diploma in English and History through Oscail in DCU as it is part-time and distant learning so I can work at the same time (fingers-crossed!) in order to fund it. Does anyone know if the Teaching Council recognises this Diploma? I know they recognise the degree from Oscail but from what I can gather you need 54 credits in a subject to register to teach it so if I did the Diploma from Oscail I would have 60 credits each in History and English after completing 4 modules in both subjects (8 modules = 120 credits = a diploma) but I can't find any mention of it on the Teaching Council website.

In a nutshell what I need to know is do I need to go back to college and start from scratch and get a degree in English to be allowed to teach it or is this diploma sufficient as I already have a degree in another teaching subject and the PGDE (in which I took English as the minor methodology subject but it was not part of the assessment)

If anyone has completed this diploma as an add-on to what they already have and has been subsequently able to register to teach the subjects with the Teaching Council I would be grateful for any information on this.

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know you only need to do 5 of the Oscail modules in History or English and the Tc will recognise it. If you ring Oscail directly, they may be able to help you with a definite answer.
