Server RAM

Hi,

I have 2 servers:

• Dell PowerEdge 2850
• Dell PowerEdge 1425

I recently bought RAM for them but it would appear its incompatible. I got 2 x (2GB 240 PIN Unbuffered DIMM 256X72DDR2 PC2 - 5300 serial CT2KIT25672AA667) for both servers.

Can anyone tell me what the proper RAM I should use is?

I found with a lot of Dell servers that a lot of memory is incompatible, so bought it direct from Dell

Any memory supplied with the Dell Poweredges will be ECC (Error correcting) and with registered buffer for reliability purposes.

If you mix it with unbuffered RAM it's very unlikely to work. The server's motherboard may also reject any memory that isn't ECC.

Pain in the a$$. I know have 8GB of useless memory. may just need to bight the bullet and fork out for DELLS overpriced RAM.

I have had a PE2950 and currently a PE1900 (as well as several Precision desktops) and both worked fine with RAM from Crucial/eBay.
Key thing as others have said is to make sure it's ECC and not mixed with non-ECC RAM but there's no need to get from DELL imo as long as you're buying the right PC4200/5300/etc type for the system

Buy the RAM from Crucial - They have a great returns policy if the RAM is not compatible.

They recommend ECC Buffered.

Memoryc are easy enough to deal with for fast deliveries and sorting out any problems. Based in Kildare.
