Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Hildegarde Naughton got a taste of the life of a Volvo Ocean Racer at the weekend, as she leapt from Team Sanya’s race boat into the sea at Miami.

After an hour of racing at Miami, Cllr Naughton gamely leapt from the boat into the water, Tricolour in hand, before being picked up by a waiting rib.

I wonder who is paying for Hildegarde to go swimming in Miami? If it is Galway City Council - I thought they were broke?

From the thread title I thought it was going to be about the mayor having a fun holiday in the sun complete with P-Diddy style boat.. looks a bit cold and rubbish to be honest!

Also, a prestigious honour to jump off a boat? Really?

    /grumpy today:mad:

It's probably part of a large promotions group from Ireland to promote the Galway leg. There could be all sorts funding the trip from Galway CC to enterprise Ireland, to the Irish tourist board and then there's all the local fundraising and the race organisers themselves.

Wah wah who is paying for this????? Get a life. Ambassadorial duties are a part of life for any politician. I'd be much more worried about the way she is treating the flag there. It's not a bloody cape. It should be treated with more respect.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,095 ✭✭✭LadyMayBelle

I was told a nation's flag should never be allowed touch the floor or water...

Not talking about flags after St Patricks Day that were being used as capes dropping to the pub floor... but ones that are being held by a representative of the state..

It is a pretty ill advised picture all right - the PR people must have been having an off day.

    Cough... cough...AHEM !
A delegation from Galway is on their way to Miami today for the city’s Volvo Ocean Race Stopover.

Representing local business and tourism interests, the group, who are travelling at their own expense, will be promoting Galway’s links to the US, the city’s potential as a destination for cruise liners, and the plans for the Volvo Ocean Race Grand Finale.

So OP please start a new thread thanking hilda for promoting the county out of her OWN pocket.

Fair Play to her i've already got some work over the ocean race coming to Galway the more work/business it brings the better

You have to speculate to e cumulate

Looks like a good promo for Galway to me !

I'd remain skeptical on the whole out of their own pocket crap to be honest. That's called politics. Is she getting paid while she's there? Can she claim overtime pay for travel time and all that crap that adds up to her making money from going there?....I'm a cynic though.

It would be funny if she got called to task on the whole Che Guevara statue seeing as though Miami is one of the main Cuban hotspots in America. Guess it confirms, nobody gives a sh!t about what Galway does and it was all saber rattling

Oh thats ok then, the mayor really pays for her own junkets? Gosh I wouldn't fancy the gig, Oranmore would be as far as I would be able to afford to go when all the wolves are kept from the door.

Some people really need to get a life.

Imagine a politician travelling for work purposes, what a shocker!! I hope she didn't pay out of her own pocket. If she wasn't over there you would probably have people complaining that its not being promoted. I travel with work from time to time and do you think I fork out for my travel and expenses myself, you can be damn sure I don't.

Some day she will be the President For Life and we all will remember this just for what it is, a small step towards grandness.

Im confused now  - Who is paying for the trip? Its just that everytime you open a local paper, its all about the corpo having no money and having to chase people for rates and property taxes. The grass looks like its not being cut as often as it used to. One thing Im sure of is there will be a mad clean up and gardening effort around the town before the sail boats come.

They will obviously have separate budgets for different things. Obviously they will have to allocate a certain amount of money for travel etc every year, especially with a big event like the ocean race coming up regardless of being short in other areas.

In this case though they are claiming the money is out of their own pocket.

This positives from this publicity will probably outweigh the cost either way.

But, I think we need to cut the OP some slack. We should question what is being done with public money. If only we'd done that over the past 15 years, well, you know that.

Galway City Council shouldn't be spending money on travel - full stop!

Why not? You can't just put blanket bans on travel when it is a requirement. Travel is a requirement in nearly every area of business why would it be any different for Galway city council which for the sake of this argument is a business.

The publicity gained will probably far far out way the costs.

The amount of money that's being wasted digging up perfectly good roundabouts to be replaced with cursed traffic lights is a far bigger concern than the tiny amount of money in comparison that it costs to fly someone to Miami, if they have even paid for it, which they claim they haven't.

If Galway City Council was a business, it would have been liquidated long ago what with cost overruns on projects and losing customers to The City Bin. Business travel me árse - Fuppin junkets is all.

You obviously have a very poor grasp of how things work if you think business travel can just be stopped. Its part and parcel of life and its an important one at that.

Its also arguing over absolute peanuts, the cost of a flight for one person to miami return and food and accommodation for a few days would not even cover the cost of a very small job which the council would be doing.

I agree totally with you the way the city council run their jobs. ;)

So the Council should hide under a stone and hope that people forget Galway exists ???
Kevin M Sheehan of Norwegian Cruise Line, the third biggest liner company in the world, said his company will come to Galway. However, the provision of the facilities planned for the new port would copper-fasten their arrival. His company’s biggest liner carries 5,000 passengers and 7,000 crew.

Robert W Lepisto, president of Seadream, which specialises in longer stays and smaller numbers, asked for a seven-day itinerary which would include visiting such local attractions as theatre, sport, restaurants and pubs, and the Aran Islands. Emelio Freeman of Azamara, also expressed similar interest.

All three executives stated their pleasure that Galway had sought them out.
    From this week's Galway Advertiser:

If just one liner comes to Galway as a result of the Mayor's visit to Miami, it will have paid for whatever it cost many many many times over.
