Blatter wants alternative to penalty shoot outs

Blatter has called penalty shout outs a 'tragedy' and asked Franz Beckenbauer, who is heading a group looking at rule changes, to come up with something better.

I can't think of a better alternative tbh. Number of corners won/conceded, or any other statistical measure would be so dull. Playing on for unlimited time wouldn't work. Am racking my brain but as far as I can see penalties are the best way to settle it. The drama is great for the impartial fans and makes for a great spectacle.

    Any better ideas?

Sepp Blatter wants penalty shoot-out alternative

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.
Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes.
"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said.
"Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence."
He added: "Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future."
The Champions League final was decided on penalties this season , with Chelsea winning after Bayern Munich dominated the game. It was the 10th time that the European Cup final has gone to a shoot-out.
What was there before penalty shoot-outs?
Before shoot-outs were introduced in 1970, drawn games went to either a replay, lots were drawn or they were decided by a coin toss - in the 1968 European Championship semi-final, Italy beat Soviet Union on a coin toss

Zambia also won a major cup in a penalty shoot-out this season, beating Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations .
The World Cup final has twice been decided on penalties, with Brazil beating Italy in 1994 and Italy seeing off France in 2006.
Blatter referred to the "tragedy" of shoot-outs after Italy's win, although four years later he suggested having all draws in World Cup group games ending with penalties.
The Swiss was speaking to delegates at the Fifa congress on Friday.
Fifa has revealed the decision on the introduction of goal-line technology will take place in Zurich on 5 July rather than in Kiev three days earlier, the day after the Euro 2012 final.
Hawk-Eye, a camera-based system, will be used by independent testers during England's friendly against Belgium on 2 June, although match officials will have no access to data and the trial will have no impact on any contentious goal-line decisions.

    Coin Toss ??????

    :O :O !!

but seriously , what else can they do ? keep playing untill someone scores ? ? infinite added time for golden goal :P

I've a great idea, but it involves Blatter and fire.

Two-touch free kicks. Taken from outside the penalty box, all players from both teams allowed, no more than two touches by one team to score.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,712 ✭✭✭CR 7

Attacker starts with the ball on the centre spot. Defender + Keeper start inside the box. Play continues until ball goes out of play or into the net.:pac: It'd be some laugh seeing a keeper try to get past a defender and score.

    He probably wants a replay.

How about the captain from each side have to duke it out, bare knuckle style?

    1. - A form of AET where teams have to remove a player at regular intervals (e.g every 5 minutes). Can be golden goal, two clear-goals, haven't really thought this through.

    2. -Playing penalty shoot-out before ET.

Pros- Guaranteed an attacking ET by one side anyway. Players can redeem themselves for missing pen.

Cons- One side will park the bus. Also pens can take quite a while. Hard to imagine playing 30 minutes football straight after them.

3.- Simple 5-a-side after 30 minute period and must win by two clear goals.

Pros- free-flowing and exciting. Won on ability rather than lottery. Can't park bus.

Cons Football is an 11 a-side game. Can favour attacking teams (maybe not a bad thing for some :D). Players will be jaded after ET.

4.- Statistics. Best I can come up with are number of corners, goals during tournament.

    Pros- perceived better team wins.

Cons- far, far too many. And way too many variables at play to go into here.

If I had to choose I'd try work with my first suggestion but a variation on 2 could work perhaps.

After the 90mins, the two keepers must leave the pitch and the next goal wins.
Que amazing shots on goal from all over the shop!:pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,828 ✭✭✭gosplan

    Simples.

Short penalty shootout involving 3 players from each team to take place at 90 minutes.

Then extra time to be played and if no goals scored, the team that won the shootout wins.

no one can ever really play for penalties then, and if they do, they'll have to defend like crazy for half an hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,465 ✭✭✭kitakyushu

Solution: Put Sepp Blatter standing in the middle of the centre-circle. Each team take turns kicking him in the balls. The first team to make him cry goes to the next round.

(alternatively go back to golden goal (only make it unlimited time so that teams playing for penos don't even have that option anymore). I know GG has been critcised for encouraging defensive play but, after watching the likes of Chelsea it's clear that teams don't need any encouraging anyway if that's what they want to do. Further, the better team did win both Euro 96 and Euro 2000 on it so it's already as least as accurate as letting the result depend on penos. It'd be even better at giving us the right winner with no peno shootout on offer on top of it)

He calls it a tragedy, I thinks its fair enough way to decide a match.
The bigger tragedy is not having goal line tech and replays for important decissions.

Penalty shoot outs are great (well, for neutrals anyway!) and they shouldn't be gotten rid of.

A lottery? No. Which ever team take the best penalties wins, it's a skill. A cruel way to lose? Yes, but in what scenario is it not cruel to lose a closely contested cup final?

7 a side for 15 minutes after 90 minutes instead of extra time, no chance of a penalty shoot out then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,220 ✭✭✭Keith186

Should be decided by a game of keepie uppies.

Players from each team have to keep the ball up without touching the ground. One player can only take a couple touches before it has to be passed to a team mate.

Who ever drops it first loses. Simples!

What was that thing they used to do in America?

    Showdown or something.

A player has to run from about 30 yards out and dribble around the goalie to core.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭jaykay74

I'd keep pens but make all 11 from each team take one, a random selection of fans from the crowd, the kit man & the managers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I propose a 50 man battle royale, no holds barred, over the top rope challenge, complete in a WWE ring.

23 memebers of each squad complete with manager and his assistant fight it out until someone wins.

Could get the WWE crowd in on it to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,508 ✭✭✭Your Airbag

The teams play on as normal, 11 v 11, same tactics and all that, except now we introduce a hungry lion onto the pitch.

Or the players line up in the pre-match handshake fashion except instead of shaking hands they punch each other in the stomach. The team with the least amount of players passed out wins.

There will never be a better way of deciding a match than penalties imo.

Apart from being very fair, and despite what some say, a skill, they are great for football.

I remember my first tournament (USA 94) and being thrilled by the drama of penalty shootouts. Since then I've always loved them. Even non-football fans get drawn in by penos.

The only alternative I could think of is something similar to penalties, but arguably involving more skill, which would be ice-hockey style penos, with the player starting in the centre circle and being given 10 seconds to score.

    Interesting replies on this thread.

From what I recall over the years people have been very positive to the idea of having an alternative to penalties, but it seems that when Blatter sugests it it becomes 'Men-in-white-coats time'

Had, lets say, Johnny Giles suggested such a thing I'm sure many here would be lauding him for such brilliant foresight.

Huge Le Tiss fan, but he is completelky wrong here, Blatter has been saying this for nearly 20 years, he first spoke of it after USA '94, good to see the old English chip on the shoulder is alive and well.

Blatter is indeed correct it is a very cruel and harsh way to decide a competetion, however unless he has a viable alternative solution he really should keep stum.

Blatter is a fool but comparing him to Hitler might be, shall we say, taking it a bit too far.

Personally I think penalties is as good a way as any other of settling a game, not to mention that it's a great, tense spectacle for the fans. This idea that it's a 'lottery' is absolute bullsh1t. Taking a good penalty is a skill. There's a reason why players likes Shearer and Le Tissier never missed.

The reason why England used to lose all those shootouts? While they were saying 'no use practising penalties sure it's a lottery anyway' the Germans were over on their training ground taking dozens of the damned things, until every player was comfortable with the idea. Deciding a game on something like stats would be dull and boring, even it was fairer.
