Raced a 200m at a graded meet last May 2011 in 26.23 secs off 5 months of middle distance training.
Raced it again a year later at the same meet last month and set a pb of 24.84 secs. As Krusty says, life begins at 40 :)

Love to know how you will do this. Let me know as I want to go sub 18 too.

Can I ask if age will be a factor for you, weight etc? If you are young, and in shape and new to it all I am sure you could well get to your target. I am in my mid 30s and feel that maybe getting to 18 is a little too far for me.

I am targeting sub 18 before the end of the year, currently at 18:40. I don't think there is any secret to obtaining it. A good mix of sessions, easy runs, recover runs and long runs are necessary for 5k training despite the short distance. Some sessions I have found good for 5k and helped me knock a minute off my time in 3 months:

12x400m @ quicker than 5k pace (mile or 3k pace) with 60 sec recovery

    5x1k @ 5k pace off 90 sec to 2 min recovery

Tempo runs with about 20 minutes running at 5k pace + 20 secs or so

About ten days out from the race I do 3x1 miles @ 5k pace off 3 mins recovery, this is a key session for me

And a long run of at least ten miles is good once a week as well. I don't think sub 18 is unachievable for someone in there 30's, far from it. In fact I think with the right attitude, sub 16 is perfectly possible for someone in their 30's if they commit to the training.

Only started running last May and trained for the Dublin race series. Ran the 5 mile in 51.24. I went out last night and done a 5 mile in 43.11. Probably not the best to compare as the lack of training last year and this year will hopefully get better.

After the half marathon last year I just stopped running altogether and have only been doing strength training for the last few months.

Oh and down from 14 stone 3 to 11 stone 7.

Good thread, and very motivational. Just goes to show in most instances what consistency and hard work gets...

My first run was the Conn half Marathon in 2007 and I was wrecked for a week after it
    1:53:40
Most Recent half Marathon at Limerick this summer, I went cycling the next day
    1:23:40

    10k times:

    Dunshaughlin 2007 : 48:48
    Dunshaughlin 2008 : 46:19
    Dunshaughlin 2009 : 42:24
    K-Club 10K 2010 : 42:19 (focus was on tri)
    Doing tris, no 10ks 2011 : -
    Dunshaughlin 2012 : 40:00

    FWMM 2011 62.14
    FWMM 2012 52.51

Not the best course for timing but to date is the only race I've run twice and I've run faster 10K's so I'm looking forward to rerunning other races in the future :) and hopefully making some more improvements!

Ran Dublin marathon aged 18 in 3:35 on token training.
Ran 1:24 for a HM aged 21 on 5-6 weeks of training twice a week but was pretty fit at the time anyway

Basically took a 25 year sabatical then apart from an outing in the Ballycotton 10 every 4 or 5 years where I always took 72-74 mins

Did a HM in 1:38:50 in 2010 on the back of twice a week training. Realised I could still run.

Had a second marathon "debut" in Sept 11 (30 years after my first ) and ran 3:14:37. Got such a kick I haven't stopped - did VLM in 3:02 in April.

    10 miler race PB has gone 71:30 -> 71:15 -> 64:10 -> 63:04 over the last 18 months.

    Recent 5k in 18:26

Recent HM in 1:24:17 - still a minute off aged 21 but I'm not complaining!
Regular races (agree with previous posters) , training 5 days a week or so and nearly 12kg weight loss have all helped!

Life as a runner can even begin at 45+

Ran in my early teens and have munster schools winners team medals U-14 two years in a row. Probably just making up the number and not the best on the team. Annoyed that I gave up running when a team mate who was probably the 3/4 best in the team has run 2hr 3x marathon. I was being trained to hate the sport rather than love it. Trained for results rather than a future. Dragged out by my wife to go for a run about 2 years ago to run 2.5 miles. It nearly killed me. Was doing martial arts and thought I was fit but I was no where near. had to stop a few times and barely made it home before my wife (she would never leave it down :) ). So since then I have took to it and got really serious about it this year and have averaged 40+ miles a week so far. Want to run till and on the day I die now :). Lost 2.5 stone so far. Need to lose another one over the summer to get some real speed in those legs. Running has changed my life. I would post on that thread the before and after but I am not at the after place just yet.

    Mallow 10 - March 2011 - 81 mins
    Ballycotton 10 - March 2012 - 71 mins

    Bay Run 1/2 May 2011 - 1hr 58mins
    Cork City 1/2 June 2011 - 1hr 51mins
    Cork City 1/2 - Monday week - ???

    DCM Oct 2011 4hrs 27mins 8'(
DCM Oct 2011 bring it on :)

5K March 2011 (first race) 23mins 10 (feel going sub 20 would be defo doable now)

1 Mile time now 5min 44 into a very strong wind in a straight line course. Looking forward to the goal mile at xmass to knock lots of time off this.

    Much credit to excellent coaching.

Funny what 18 months can do.
    2013 ran 17:52 5k
    3:04 marathon
    62:30 10 Mile

..... and now got my mojo back. Watch this space as I am starting to take it up a level ;)

After finished the Rotterdam marathon in a not so sensational 4:07 in April 2010, I got bored of distance running. A few months later after being in Barca and watching Derval win silver I got inspired to get down to the track and try out a few time trials. I ran a high 67 for 400m off absolutely no training. A week later I ran 66.2 with spikes, but still as a time trial. I went away travelling then, and got to Melbourne a few months later and joined a club. I arrived at the tail end of the season and pissed around a bit. I did train, but not consistently or very effectively. I got one 400 race in and ran 63.9 hand timed to win a race (64.04 to adjust for hand timing).

Last season I took things seriously and got my time down to 58.68 and ran under 60 on 5 occasions. I'm hoping to take close to another 3 seconds off it next season and get below 56.

Have progressed a fair bit since this post a year and a half ago. PB is now at 55.00 from a couple of weeks ago. Pretty much 9 full seconds faster than my first race and close to 13 seconds faster than that first time trial. Can't see myself looking to improve on that 4:07 marathon anytime soon! :)

You just need to hold that pace for another 41.8km and you'll be fine. Just remember to save a bit for the finishing kick!

I remember doing a 4.55 1500m, and coming dead last by 30secs or so afew yrs back, nearly finished off athletics totally for me, I was gutted and largely packed it in for several months afterwards. If someone told me after that race that I'd go on to get a 4.08 for the 1500 last year I'd have laughed at them and said its not possible.
