Guys, I need help building my new e-penis!

Evening all,

I'm about to invest a lot a money in a PC for gaming (mostly FPS games so need proper components).

I live in Switzerland and I have decided to buy from STEG as everybody here seems to love them!
Furthermore, importing from outside Switzerland can prove quite expensive but if you guys think I can get a much better deal from somewhere else in Europe, let me know!

1. What is your budget? CHF 2,500 (€2,100)

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming (BF3, Call of Duty, etc)

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 23"/24" or 27"

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Yes: Keyboard / Mouse / Wireless Card

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

8. How can you pay? All methods

9. When are you purchasing? ASAP!

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Switzerland...

So anyway, I used the STEG website and chose the following components (I will build the PC myself):

So, guys, considering I've lost touch with PC components over the last 5 years and that I don't really know what I'm doing, could you pease give me some feedback on the above choices?

Is there anything articularly bad I have chosen? Can I get better RAM for the same money or a little bit more (I'm useless when it comes to RAM...)? can i get a much better deal from somewhere else in Europe maybe? Have I chosen compnents that are no compatible?

Any advice/feedback/information will be hugely appreciated!!!

I wouldn't get a 27" monitor with only a 1920x1080 resolution, I'd want 2560x1440 or something similar to it. It would be more expensive but definitely worth it. May be worth looking at the Catleap monitor thread.

The crucial m4 is cheaper than the samsung 830 and the m4 is awesome. 16GBs ram is overkill and even if you do really want to go with it, it seems very expensive. i7s are generally worse for gaming than the i5s are so ditch the i7 unless you are doing heavy video encoding or something like that.

Hi guys and thanks for your replies!

I'm really trying to build a PC here that will be future-proof so that's why I'm going for i7 and 16GB of RAM. BUT, if you guys thin it's completely overkill then what would your alternatives be (from the STEG website!)? I don't mind saving money on PC components to afford a better monitor for exampe!

As for the "Catleap monitor thread": I saw that alright but again, importing stuff into Switzerland can prove expensive and I'm terrified of getting a dud!

Oh and if the i7 I chose is overkill, which i5 shoudl I get?

Mhhh... I compared both and here are the differences:

Read speed:

Crucial 415 MB/s
Samsung 520 MB/s

Write speed:

Crucial 175 MB/s
Samsung 320 MB/s

Not sure how the Crucial is better based on that?

id agree all reviews say the Samsung 830 destroys the Crucial M4
as for your graphics card maybe look at a Asus GTX670 Direct CU II Top it beats the gtx680 and 7970 for less cash , see review here first time they ever gave a 10/10

I linked the 7970 because it has more Vram, which will be useful for triple display setup. You could also go with the 670, but no non reference versions are in stock at HWVS atm.

FYI Switzerland isn't in the EU so this would be subject to import duty.

EDIT: And I don't think HWVS even ship to Switzerland.

I would suggest this monitor if you are mainly playing FPS', 120hz so ideal for same. Pair with a GTX 680, and if you are thinking multi monitor allow SLI/xfire unless you are happy with mid/high eye candy.

if you budget can stretch CHF 50 or so, I wiuld look at the Corsair Obsidian 650D or Corsair Graphite 600T, much better cases IMO-though its down to personal taste as well

I know you dont want to OC but at least do it some justice and get a k edition socket 2011 processor. At least you'll benefit more from turbo boost and if you decide to sell it would help resale value.
