Urban farm beside DCU in Glasnevin/Drumcondra area

Was just browsing on Google Maps and noticed this large farm (for a city farm) just beside DCU

I Googled but couldn't find much info on it, or how it has survived the bubble years without being turned into a housing estate!

Anyone got more info or links?

I'm almost certain it is a private farm owned by the same people as the Highfield Hospital Group.

How the hell is a farm financially beneficial in the middle of a city? Better question: why the HELL didn't they sell it during the boom-time?? :eek:

I recall they sold a 10 acre field for £30million in the 1990's. It was an astronomical figure at the time.

I don't know how active the farm is but the last time I was near it the hay barn was well stocked.

Highfield is a privately owed and ran health care company that was set up in 1825. It is run by the fifth generation of the same family who first founded it. I expect they have very complicated deeds of ownership to their land that prohibit selling some of it off just to make a buck. Some of it has been over the years, but if they get rid of all of it, they'll risk throwing the baby out with the bathwater as I'd imagine its setting is why they get as much business/patients as they do.

Albert College and its surrounds also used to be a farm when they were Albert Agricultural College, later part of UCD. So good history of farms and colleges in the area http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_College_(Dublin)

No, DCU paid through the nose for just 10 acres which they bought from the Eustace family, who are the owners of the larger farm (and also the owners of Highfield Healthcare) linked to above.
