My Jack russell has started on Noroclav and carprodyl after a tail opreation. he is a bit down in the dumps and not as lively as he was even yesterday which i am happy enough for now with because of his stiches but a friend says these drugs can have a sedative effect and calm him down. is that true?

Dogs, like people, can be a bit off form when they are on antibiotics, so i wouldnt be too worried. But if you think hes very much out of sorts then maybe ask your vet about it.

Thanks, he is just very restless around the place. he doesnt enjoy the sun. and because he has no tail left he cant show any emotions.he is still enjoying his neck rubs but he is not himself at the moment. feel really bad for him.

Noroclav is an antibiotic and may make your dog feel a bit down in the dumps (and might give him a dodgy belly too - just something to watch out for!) and Carprodyl is an anti inflammatory which shouldn't do much other than deal with pain and inflammation. Neither should have a sedative effect. In saying this, and as andreac already pointed out, they may make his feel a bit out of sorts. If he is acting very depressed (not eating, not responding etc.) you will need to call your vet to make sure everything is ok but at the moment he is probably just feeling a bit sorry for himself. He could also be in a bit of discomfort from the operation and this could be putting a downer on his mood. All dogs react differently to operation etc. so just keep an eye on him (and maybe spoil him a little bit with rubs!).

Also dogs do not act out a brave face when they are feeling bad. Healthier that way but worrying. Our wee dog is a JRT/Bassett cross and has the basset long face when not happy. As soon as they turn that corner, they are fine again and of course you are keeping a great watch.
