Just saw a new pedestrian bridge under construction at NUIG.
Anyone know if this is spanning the Corrib using the old railway bridge pillars, or just over to Earls island?
Could be hook into a nice cycle track to Clifden :)

It could be the Fisheries Field Greenway discussed in the cycling thread.

No it's just going from the back of the college bar to Fisheries Field. It's just a cable stay footbridge.

How nice of them to cut the drunken stumble from the college bar to town by 5 minutes! :D

It's looking well. Goes from Fisheries Field to the back of the Martin Ryan Institute.

Surely it would have made much more sense to build the pedestrian bridge beside the Salmon Weir Bridge, which probably would have more footfall than down there?

But then it would'nt cross the Eglinton canal and would'nt be on Nuig property.

There are plans for the Salmon Weir bridge to run a parallel bridge to the south for vehicular traffic. Of course this is dependent on money.

On the topic of money, word has it that the funding for this bridge was bungled and when Dublin said no, it had to be magicked from elsewhere.

Have to say, I think it's a pity to see this.

The Eglinton Canal was finally closed off to traffic from/to the sea in the mid 1950s. It'd be a great resource if the Corrib could be accessed from the sea. This bridge is just another nail in that coffin....even if the coffin is over 60 years old at this stage!

The footbridge is now finished and opened for pedestrians this morning. Just been for a walk and its a nice job, very impressive...
There are gates at the college end which will apparently be closed at night, but the bridge will still be accessible from the Fisheries Field end, and the canal towpath.

Very heavy traffic on this bridge since the college started back.
Nicely illuminated at night, some thought went into the lighting.

Ya it's a nicer walk compared to the old way, the footpaths are too narrow on university road so this bridge helps things a bit. Still have to negotiate the annoying salmon weir however, it'll be years before another bridge is built there and they big fig tree on the eglington canal side is gonna cause so trouble for the council securing planning permission..... the greens do like that tree.

It's earmarked as being part of the greenway that will run through the campus, along by corrib village up through dangan and on

The bridge itself is nicely lit but the section of path from the bridge to the cathedral is very dark at night
