Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Leveson Inquiry in the UK has revealed widespread invasions of privacy through methods such as phone hacking. Would we be naive to think that the same tactics in Irish journalism have not been widespread for years.

Given the recent Prime Time Investigates debacle is it time for a public inquiry into the professionalism of journalism in Ireland?

And how confident would you be in the ability of the Irish state to conduct such as investigation given the difficulties in convicting those involved in the Irish financial collapse?

Yup, we definitely need yet another dawdling, time-sucking, money-frittering tribunal...
While Irish journalists are undoubtedly as amoral as their British counterparts, I doubt the crime-cost to justice-benefit ratio would be worth the many tens or hundreds of millions we'd waste on such a thing.
If we were to have another one, just to fill our time and solicitors' pockets, we should have a tribunal of tribunals, and the waste of money inherent.

Absolutely, lets set up a tribunal into the tribuals to see why the tribunals take so much time and waste our money...

Some sectors of the Irish Press have been carefully studying the UK for decades, learning what they can in a slow way and then struggling to imitate their idols as best they can.

    The below is typical.
The family has asked to be left alone at this difficult time to come to terms with the loss of their child. Today the curtains were closed and the newspapers hadn't been collected from the front porch. a Toyota Corolla has been parked to the side of the house and not been moved in the last 18 hours. A childs toy lay in the grass, perhaps belonging to the deceased. The phone remains unanswered and the Neighbours have declined to comment.

I especially dislike the Irish Independent these days, in my opinion they'll print anything without consulting a moral compass or considering standards or good taste and decency to sell advertising - Its now a low brow UK tabloid - everything but the tits.......

Announce an amnesty from prosecution, both civil and criminal, for any media employees that may have indulged in systematic invasions of privacy as long as they allocute to them.

As the State would never authorise the cost of another ferociously expensive tribunal this is about the only way the facts will ever be shown.

However I guess the Dail's not really in a position to throw stones with the whole Haughey / Doherty scandal.
