As 650Ginge has said, you'll need a C1 (better going for the C though and kill two birds). You'll be legally required to be accompanied by someone with a full C1/C Licence.

Check with your local tax/licence office, a D1 vehicle could be based on a >3,500kg GVW vehicle so you might be entitles to have C1 added to your licence without doing a further test. It's worth a try.

While a D1 could be over 3.5t it doesn't mean you can drive anything other than a mini bus on it, same way as a D licence doesn't let you drive a HGV. The vehicles may be similar in size but have different licence requirements as a D/D1 only mentions passengers while C/C1 is weight based.

Nor disputing what you say, so a licence granted to permit a person to drive around, for example, five tonne of people cannot be extended to permit a person to drive around a similar amount of dirt without passing a further test.
One would have thought that passing the test to transport people would be more than enough to cover the transport of dirt :(

you have a point but its about taking cash from your pocket and so is the test as if you are unlucky you will be failed a few times to generate more cash

its the only way though so best of luck to you

True but it's an EU wide law so we aren't the only ones affected. TBH our HGV/Bus tests are (when I did them) a joke compared to what is required in other countries, so it's not that hard to get the correct licence here.

Isn't a campervan theoretically a bus, as it can carry more than 3 people ?

Hence you should be able to drive it with either C1 or D1 license.
