Was speaking to a friend in Melb yesterday. He told me he was ringing around a few places during the week but none are open to show the matches. Even the casino doesn't have Setanta so it won't be on there. The only place he could find that will be opened is the Celtic Club. They're opening 15 mins before the game and closing straight away after. It'll be jammers no doubt. This is turning out to be a balls :(

We called a place called the Charles Dickens Tavern, think it's on Collins Street. Anyhow apparently they will be showing most if not all of the games, but definitely Ireland V Croatia. Funnily enough I was speaking to a Croatian on the phone so there could be good banter inside there :D C'mon you boys in green:)

Cheers for that. Yeah it's on Collins St. Never been in to it though. Might head there myself. I'm not mad keen on going to the Celtic Club. The toughest part will be staying awake long enough to make the match after a feed of dink although I managed it for the CL final :o

From their pictures on the website it looks like a traditional sports bar. I'm from Cork so I will be watching Cork V Kerry before that in the Quietman then I will stagger down to Collins St. Can't wait for it now :D

The Charles Dickens isn't the nicest of places to say the least but it's a football pub (the Melbourne Victory supporters club base themselves there).

  • Registered Users Posts: 94 ✭✭darcy07

someone should open there doors and help the fans in need to watch the games my reading of it is there will be big demand but little supply maybe we should pick a pub that has setanta and all email them showing the demand if you show it people will come

I'm sure it's more a case that they're not allowed to open their doors due to licencing constraints etc. I'm sure they'd all be open 24 hours if they were allowed!

I presume some English or Irish pubs will open early morning to facilitate the people who want to watch games. They should be delighted with the extra business it would bring in. They would be stupid not to do it.

It's a hole alright but most reliable spot in Melbourne for European soccer and rugby.

I'll be in Melbourne for the Spain game, staying in the CBD so looking for somewhere handy to watch it. The imperial hotel on Bourke Street says on its website that it's showing every game live, anyone ever been?
Living on the Gold Coast so the Spain game is the only one with which I'll be able to find a place with decent banter!

The Imperial is the Melbourne Heart supporters bar and is definitely a football spot, if it's on there then yeah it's a good place to go for it.

i work around the corner from the imperial will call in after work and ask the question

    Hey Johnny,

Maybe Father Ted's in the city might be open or the Munster Inn. Can't mention what pub in Aucky I'll be going to on Monday morning to watch the game as it's legal to be open at that time of the morning. There'll be a good group of us there cheering on the boys! We know the owner and he's letting us in the back door. Pint and a breakfast roll for $15 aint be too shabby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,873 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Couldn't think of anything worse than trekking to Rosie's at 3am! They should have it on though. Not sure who else will given a lot of pubs here don't bother with Setanta.

I'll be watching from home anyway seeing as all Ireland's group games fall on a work night/morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,251 ✭✭✭massdebater

$51 to get Setanta Sports added to Foxtel for two months (that's the minimum contract you can get). Myself and a few mates will chip in for that and watch all the matches from home. It'll be cheaper than heading into the city the whole time and this way I can record all the games in case i miss a belter of a game.

see ye there.. COME ON IRELAND

i just got a reply from the casino and they will also be showing the game in their livewire bar.
it might be a better option because it is bigger.
not sure what the alcohol situation is though.

The Treasury Casino has a 24 hour 7 day a week Liquor Licence, (Excluding Christmas Day, New Years Eve, Good Friday and Anzac Day)

They dont like to much of a joke in there after 5.00 AM and dont try getting in there sh!t faced after 15 hours drinking as its still primarily a Casino not a pub, there have been many wasted walks up Queen St just to be turned around, if you stay in the bar areas you should be fine though.
