I was asking yesterday about the 17hmr vs the 22wmr and decided on the 17hmr. Thanks for your valued advise.
So i made the little trip down to duffy's in Galway today and asked about the cz452 in 17hmr and brian threw a spanner in the works and got me all confused again..

He showed me the Marlin 917v, black synthetic stock and a heavy barrel.
much cheaper than the cz but not having used a marlin nor do i know anyone with one now i don't know what to do.
My thoughts are to stick with the cz, but there is €200 in the difference
is the cz €200 better. I think i prefer the cz over the marlin but don't know why.
I would want to keep the gun for a long time.

917v is probably just as good a shooter tbh!!

lot of hype over them in 17..

Id go for the marlin just on what ive read online..

I own a cz 452 and the brother has a marlin 917v, they do the exact same thing. I dont like the look of the Marlin so I went with the Cz ! If you have the cash to spare go with the Cz and you'll never look back. Saying that, the brother loves his marlin an it is a very solid gun. I just find it ugly :P

I had the same problem when I got my HMR. I went with the CZ, it's accurate and I'm happy out with it. I never fired the Marlin but as has been said already there are loads of good reviews about the Marlin.

It was the fit and finish of the CZ that made my decision for me. It seems more of a substantial gun.

Personally I would go for the CZ have them for years in different models/Calibres, it sounds like to me he is trying to sell you what he has in stock instead of getting you what you want if he has not got it, if that is the case walk away and go somewhere that appreciates your custom

It was the look of it more than anything else that was putting me of,
i know you should be more concerned with how it shoots but as the same time if your going to buy it and own it for a long time you have to be happy with all aspects of it yeah, i think i just answered my own question.

To satisfy my own curiosity I had the two guns out to zero them at 145 yards. They both shot the exact same size group with the exact same ammo , exact same man behind the trigger !! The Cz does have a FAR smoother bolt though. I was offered money for it today and I told the chap Id never sell it :D

I think the brother is looking to sell his though , its in mint condition but he wont get anywhere near as much as I would get if I sol my Cz. Marlin wont hold value half as much.

I'd gor the cz, it seems to be your favourite so you dont want to end up regretting buying a marlin, i only ever handled marlins but i didn't like them, love cz's but if you want a gun for life maybe try get your hands on a sako, lovely rifles but pricey, if i had the money its what i'd go for or a weihrauch or anschutz, try get your hands on as many differant guns as you can and see which you like the most, 300-500 euro might seem like a lot more to pay for but its very small when spread over a lifetime

    Now for my few buttons:
    What do you want?
    1. Is it a work horse your looking for or do you take pleasure from things of beauty.
    2. Do you want to go down the road of many a good piece of advice spoken here and spend little money on a rifle, that does in fact shoot straight, so that you then have loads left over to accessorise.
    3. Do you want a rifle that is going to put rounds through the same hole every time you shoot at paper or are you happy to have a good hunting set up that you will carry all day and all night if you wish.
    4. How often will you use it, will you justify the out lay (no matter what you spend you will siffer 'Buyers Remorse'.
These are questions I asked myself on a recent purchase.
My big deciders where budget, intended use and frequency of use.
With this in mind I went with the Marlin Xs7 .243. Yeah it’s ugly but it shoots MOA out of the box. A few of the guys I shoot with said they wish there where budget rifles when they started off.
As to longevity, here too I did some research, so I repeat the question, how much shooting do you intend to do? Any of the reading I have done has said that rifle barrels firing hot loads have a short life span but they are talking about thousands of expended rounds. This can be realistically worked out by honestly telling yourself what is the maximum you are going to be shooting over a year.
There is loads of sound advice in this thread but only you truly know what you want:D…… Happy Shopping

I think 452 varmints are a beauts, plus you already have a 452 so you have that muscle memory instilled in your hands from operating the rifle.

Buy the Cz it will be worth twice as much on a trade in the future, the trigger on the Cz is better aswell and can be adjusted with a cheap trigger kit.

Had a 917v and loved it, very accurate rifle and accounted for countless rabbits and a couple dozen foxes. Yeah it was ugly but at the time i didnt have over €200 more for the cz and i was very happy with my purchace, actually sorry i sold it :(

Im just back in now after been out with my marlin vs and one of the lads with his cz.

The bolt on his did feel smoother but thats not saying the marling is rough.

His had a much smaller hawke 3-9x40 scope than my bigger 4-16x50 scope, the cz had a 16" heavy barrel and the marlin had a 22" heavy stainless barrel but yet the cz felt heavier

best thing you can do is hold both guns and see which one fits you better and ignore the price and buy the one which you feel most comfortable holding.

Chuck hawks groups are horrible in that test :confused:

He couldnt even do a .5" group with an anschutz.

my marlin will shoot under an inch all day long with most ammo.

100yard groupings, the boxes are 1.25"

My cz 455 hmr thumbhole shoots .5 MOA or better at 100 yards every time! I would NEVER look at another rifle after buying this one. It feels and shoots way better than my mates marlin:-) but i have to say,the glass makes a big difference. I'm using a hawke endurance 30 and its a great scope for the price.

Get the Marlin and spend the difference on a scope.

Agreed, the marlin looses on looks but most probably performs better. I did a lot of online research prior to my purchase and was debating the same too rifles.
