Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    "Ensure we stay at the heart of Europe...."

    FF/FG/Labour crap to vote for something they know is ****e for the country.

    We voted for Lisbon (eventually) to be at the heart of Europe apparently and what good did it do us? :rolleyes:

    Please 'revert' to me. Eh no. You mean reply.

    If I freeze water and make ice, and then it melts, the ice reverts to water.

    a guesstimate is something esb do with meters

    they make a guess of how much units of electricity they think you have used... more often than not its wrong.

    But they make the guess based on previous usage - so I dont know how it is different to an estimate?

    Personally.

    People using mathematical symbols in sentences.

    Isn't methinks a Shakspearean word and so acceptable?

    Several - wrecks my head when people use this when speaking about multiples of anything at all.

    Single = 1
    Couple = 2
    Half dozen = 6
    Dozen = 12

    Several = 7.

    Edit: Also, amazeballs , totes, FML and anything that has a hashtag. Go back to your T4 programs if you want to talk like that and fcuk off.

    Several doesn't mean seven. So you've probably been correcting people incorrectly for years. Ouch!

    'Literally.'

    You weren't literally rolling on the floor laughing.

    And people who finish sentences with 'like'. Happens an awful lot in Limerick.

    did you ever hear the expression "you know that kind of way?" USUALLY AT THE END OF A SENTENCE, I HATE IT

    jul 11 to sept 11 bill was €89 guesstimate reading

    nov 11 to jan 12 bill was €41 actual reading

    Yes they guess it. They don't guesstimate it.

    I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. :)

    "Epic", "fail" or "epic fail"... just fcuk off.

    I'm fine with "It was a failure of epic proportions." I'm even happy with "It was an epic failure." That's all grand, just fcuk off with and stop parroting American illiterates.

    Also, what the fcuk does: "He drank (etc) like a boss" mean? Is it a reference to computer games? If so, it's pretty fcuking pathetic for grown-ups to say it. In fact, even if it's not a reference to computer games, it's pretty fcuking stupid full stop.

    I'm not so keen on words like "cookie", "fries", "mall", or "store" (as in "shop") either. Why do we need Americanisms in Ireland? Our words are much better! ;)

    Grrrrrr!!!

    For some reason it annoys me when someone younger than me
    calls me "Kid" or a Limerick Phrase would be "a boy de kid" as a greeting.
    Knackers love using the word Kid.

    I've found they also love using 'horse' and 'face' as greetings.
    Very strange.

    I literally* predict this is going to be a big huge thread with lots of replies like!

    *I actually find it more annoying when people use "literally" semi-correctly: when they're talking about an actual action, but when there's no doubt as to whether the sentence has a literal or figurative meaning.

    REVERT
    Also there is a whole segment of the financial community who don't know how to use revert properly in emails.

    I've spoken to friends who work in and around the IFSC and there are a whole host of people who use it incorrectly. Some people seem to use it in the exact same manner as reply, which leads to nonsense. We believe that people who don't understand the correct usage started using it to some more professional. Ironic that is ends up showing them up.

    Agreed. I'm employed in that sector and misuse of revert is very common. It's primarily used instead of respond or reply.

    You can usually chop the word ACTUALLY from a sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence.

    "Yeah, no..."

    Which is it?
    Are you saying 'Yes' or are you saying 'No'?

    Or are you merely allowing a little bit of time for your brain to catch up with your mouth?

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 Captain Plan It

    "Going forward" is a really useless one. Along with "touch base" and "reach out", there are a load of useless phrases that get thrown around in offices, especially multinationals.

    Also if i ever hear someone describe a friend as a "legend", i immediately presume that their friend is an annoying ass!

    'I seen', instead of 'I saw' makes me want to slap something.

    'Face-time' is really irritating, but I'll agree with the majority and single out the misuse of 'revert' for most annoying and useless word or phrase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,143 ✭✭✭locum-motion

    "...could of..."

    As in: "my girlfriend made me so mad last night, I could of killed her"

    Should be "...could have...", or even "...could've...".

    anything dot com, amazeballs, totes, cray cray (your life isn't an MTV show, nothing is "cray cray") and people who complain about something and say "first world problem", it's like everything that you say nowadays has to relate back to the "current economic climate" somehow

    Anti-semite/anti-semitism.

    Maybe my little sister - she's a bit stupid though!!

    Okay Zebra3, I'll bite.
    I can only assume you're being ultra-pedantic about the word Semite not referring specifically to Jews but to various Middle-Eastern/Asian peoples who originally spoke the Semitic languages. (Yes, I had to look it up to check). So the average person probably doesn't know the correct use of the word Semite.

    But you're wrong if you're getting annoyed at people “misusing” the word anti-semitism. It actually does mean what everyone thinks it means.

    From the Oxford dictionary:
    anti-semite n. a person hostile to or prejudiced against Jews.
    anti-semitism n. Hostility and prejudice directed against Jewish people; (also) the theory, action, or practice resulting from this.

    The word "random" seems to be appearing in peoples sentences lately where it's not needed. It's like they're randomly throwing in the word.

    I went to see Dylan Moran a couple of years ago and he did a "bit" about teenagers using the word "random", it was very funny. "Oh my god, that church is like so random" :p

    Think it's part of his "Like, Totally" show
