    Just to add.
Compare and contrast the two schemes below, instead of capitalising on the desire to play the game, and thereby inculcate support and a sense of ownership the FAI see it as way to 'financially' capitalise.
It starts at that age group, no point trying to change adult 'mindsets'. Huge investment of money and the right kind of committment is required. The FAI and LOI need to take a huge big swallow and realise that others do it better and learn from that.

Almost twice the price? The rot is deep!

Last game with them was draw 2:2, but do we have any chance to win with Podolski and Klose now?

    I can't wait...

The first thing that needs a makeover is the mindset of the Irish football fan. Going to the pub on a sundayto shout at one english club playing another is not supporting Irish football. We are the only nation that refuses to support our own league. Yet James McClean is now a hero to the masses.
    ?

    Why even bother with them?

They can't see the disconnect between completely ignoring domestic football here (be it league of Ireland or junior football) to pump money into the English game and then being outraged when the poverty of the technical development of many of our our young players is exposed at international level.

You're pissing in the wind. Just enjoy the tournament.

I mean a small country will never produce quality players. Look at the Dutch. 16 million people and nation of football donkeys with pub teams like Ajax.

God, you could almost hear people jumping off the bandwagon last night. Well I'm off to Poland Sunday to wathc the Italy game and I'll be getting the Season ticket for the singing section later this month.
Trap is a legend for gettting this squad to the finals. Anyone remember Stan and the Cyprus game? We've come a long way.

shame on those so called 'irish fans' who are slating Roy Keane, he served his country for many years and dragged us kicking and screaming into manys a tournament.

    Short memories and all that.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Keane as a player. He is without doubt, Ireland's best ever central midfielder & one of the best ever central midfielders to play European club football.

However, he is a very bitter man.

I've no problem with him having a go at the Irish team as there is no doubt that the Irish team under-performed in this competition, but there is no need for him to take his frustration out on the fans who travelled hundreds of miles to support their team.

And support them they did, through the thick and thin. You can't ask any more of supporters than that. And they showed something which Keane has never been able to show - which is dignity when you are losing.

When Keane played for United, he slated the "prawn sandwich" brigade for not getting behind the team at the matches at Old Trafford. Now he's slating the Irish fans for getting behind their team. It seems that he's not the only one suffering from a short term memory loss.

The problem is that you can't win with Roy Keane. He aims to be the best at everything, but whether greatness is achieved or not, he is never happy. Even when United won every major trophy in 1999, he admitted himself that he couldn't enjoy the moment & walked off the pitch thinking "well, that's that".

I think the Irish fans did us proud in Poland. There's nothing worse than fans who only sing when they're winning. And even if we were winning, Keano would still find something to moan about.

Not a huge fan of Roy Keane but this stuff about the fans is nothing new.
It started when Ireland threw away a two goal lead to draw 2-2 with Holland in Amsterdam in a WC qualifier in 2000. He was disgusted and had a go at the Irish mentality which is "ah sure we'll have the craic and a good sing song whether we win lose or draw" - I can't really disagree with that.
If I was in Gdansk last night I wouldn't be singing when it was 4-0, I think I would be holding my head in my hands.
PS He wasn't bitter on ITV last night, he just stated his opinion about the Irish mentality.

Keane strives for perfection but he has to remember he was far from perfect himself when manager of Ipswich (in fact he was awful) though I will thank him for giving us this from his tenure there.....

They wouldn't. Most of their players are shite.

On an unrelated note; Sickened at Roy Keane's comments last night. We were 4-0 down what did he expect us to do, burn the stadium down, start fights or turn on the team when they need us the most? Though that seems to be an area of expertise for Roy. What a gobshite.

Roy Keane turned his back on Ireland in 2002, the only thing that ever kept him relevant was the fact most of the country supports United and he's a United legend. At the same time, I know many United fans who hate him as well.

I hope to ****, he never manages Ireland , but no doubt a minority are already calling for him to come in! :pac:

In fairness Keane has been out in the media taking shots at Ferguson and United since he was forced out of the club, seems to be alot of bad blood there also.

Do you honestly think he would even take the job. I'd safely say he still hates the current FAI administration.

Roy Keane understands juveniles though, because he still is one.
When you can't get your way, stamp your foot and walk out.
When you do get your way (management) and things aren't going your way, lash out indiscrimately, then stamp your foot some more and walk away.
Above all, make some money out of the above.
Of course he'll manage Ireland one day, he is exactly the calibre of surrender monkey the current FAI wants, he'll mask their fundamental, grass roots failures for another few years.

Every single one of the Spanish subs would start for Ireland.

I don't think there is a single Irish player who would get on the bench for Spain.

    Herein lies the difference.

Before the match I asked my mate had we any chance. He said "I'll put it to you this way, the cost of the front three Spanish players would but the entire Irish squad 2 or 3 times"

He then went on to say " it was like the Kilkenny senior team playing the Aran islands junior b team"

    Summed it up for me.

Heard Polish Radio reporting that Ireland supporters made up the largest travelling support in Poland(10%), the next nearest was Russia(8.5%). At least we were good at something.

There are more crap teams in the WC. Only the top teams get through to the 16 of the Euro's.
13 European teams will qualify for the next world cup.

The 53 national teams will be divided into nine groups, with the group winners qualifying directly to the finals, and the best eight runners-up playing home-and-away ties for the remaining four places

So we should get to the playoffs.

As an 'FYI' England have never beaten Sweden in 6 previous games in World Cup/Euro finals!

Benzema to score first in the 5pm game!

The Irish fans at the match sang their hearts out and take nothing away from them , they were great but it was more a ' happy feel good ' distraction for them and us watching at home on tv from the reality and embarrassment of the Irish teams performance ...we were all hurting after that result last night .

I'm amazed by all the abuse that has been coming McGeadys way from a lot of fans.

In qualifying and the tournament itself McGeady has scored 2 and assisted 4. Duff scored and created 0, however McGeady constantly is cited as lacking end product. I'm not trying to run Duff down, as I believe he has deserved to start too.

Elsewhere it has been pointed out that 5 of our 13 successful tackles made in that game were made by McGeady, and he attempted 30% of our challenges. This being a player who is regarded as an attacking winger.

It is a disgrace that one of our most naturally gifted footballers has been continually used as a scapegoat among certain groups, somewhat like how Robbie Keane has been treated throughout his career.

Can anyone inform me as to what this is actually about? His character or how he is perceived after leaving Celtic for Russia or something?

I think its because he was hyped to the moon when he first broke out as a young player. Some people feel that he hasn't come through on his early promise and I think thats why he gets scapegoated.

    Unfair imo as well.

Yeah he looked poor all season for Forest. They brought him back with a view to getting promotion and ended up nearly getting relegated. He seems to have piled the pounds back on again as well so I'd say his international career is well and truly dead.
