I haven't bought a collector's edition for a game since, oh... Medieval II Total War! And given the price for this, I doubt that will change (I ordered the Fallout CE with the Pip-Boy but cancelled after a few days). But damn, this is tempting.

Ok, that most recent trailer made me a little more hyped than i was.

    .............

You read and look into things way too much, looking for art...i guess.

The Witcher 3s world is probably the best in game world ever created, the reason we know is because the gameplay was so good we kept pushing on.We could actually affect the world and change it.

But every now and then someone on here posts on witcher 3 thread and says they cant get into it.....the stock reply is finish the bloody baron then decide to play it or not. It will always because be gameplay 1st, story/world 2nd.

Because I play video games for fun....not to be outraged or whatever or entertained by art in a shoddy gameplay package.

Edit: **** it, think I'll bow out of the thread for a while instead.

But the gameplay wasn't the best thing about the Witcher 3...

The combat could be quite clunky, especially the movement and different sword swing animations, fun but not near dark souls level.

I didn't think the item, looting and leveling system were great either and the inventory management became a chore.

For me what made the game great was the interesting main story and characters, the engaging and varied side quests, the lore, seeing the consequences of your decisions, exploring the beautifully crafted, realistic and mature world and finding new locations and monsters.

    Gwent wasn't bad either.

Gonna get me a new high-end gaming rig prior to this game's release, about time I retired my current one from 2014.

What are your specs? I don't think I'll need an upgrade (it's releasing on 8th gen it literally can't push past anything I'm currently able to run) but I'm guessing I'll be baseline with this RX480 & i74770k

It's an RPG, it's meant to be story driven with your decisions having an impact on the storyline. That is first and foremost. Gameplay of course also needs to be good. I think most people will have every faith in CDPR to come up with good mechanics and gameplay.

One think that worries me is travelling the map. If I have to spend 10 mins riding a bloody horse or even a car to get to my next mission then there is no story in the world that will keep me interested.

Aye, that was the #1 thing I hated about RD2, no fast travel at a whim... just that mediocre option of leaving camp via the map on the Wagon.

Our specs are actually similar. Do you not think that you'd be able to run it? Or are you looking to push high settings? I fully expect to play at around console level of graphics settings or less if I want 60 FPS or more.

It's a bad habbit for open world games to lead such a main story and encourage players to "clear" it ASAP. From what I've heard of CP2077 is about the side quests. They not only fit open world games much better imo (I don't even think they should have main quests) but it's what CDPR have been best at and the genre fits it perfectly as well. There are many things to discover in TW3 that you can only get through exploration and that's the fun of it. Turning off the minimap and getting lost in the world, stumbling upon interesting places, battles, quests, characters and gear. It's not about the destination but the journey. I really feel like that's the best way to enjoy open world games otherwise it's as you said, 10 minute delays between mission checkpoints because the travel is a choire to the player then but not if they take the time to enjoy the traveling and are willing to deviate from the beaten path and risk adventure.

Yes I agree side quests in w3 made the game. But if you're already on a mission you don't want to be taking on too many new ones. Sometimes you just need to get to your destination. If your on a mission then it involves travelling to your destination. Basically what I'm saying is I hope there is plenty of fast travel and less of this forcing us to run around on a horse so that we can "take in our wonderful graphics" that came with RDR2.

This is where quality makes a difference though. I had no problem collecting quests in W3 because I knew there would be great content waiting for me whenever I set a way point for them as opposed to mass effect Andromeda (which promised 'Witcher-like quests) where I was racking up quests all over the place and learned quickly they just weren't worth investigating.

Ah fair enough. I stopped caring about high graphic settings a few years back. Especially ultra setting and excessive filters like chromatic abberation, depth of field, blur etc. They all look gunk and the only thing I want to change is FOV to 90+ degrees but most games don't even have an FOV option anymore or you have to edit it in via configuration files.

I'll be happy enough on low graphics. The only graphic options I end up caring to put above minimum are textures (medium's usually fine), draw distance (nice to see what's actually ahead!) and resolution (native to my monitor if possible).

I get what you're saying although I haven't played RDR2 and I don't really care to based on that kind of thing. That said, if you ever "Just need" to get to your destination, that's probably too much singular quest focus for me, personally. I'll head to a quest without quicktravel and I'll likely find some nice things along the way. I think in TW3 I even stumbled upon a side quest while on the way to a main one that actually had a lot to do with the main quest. It came about so naturally only through exploration and I was honestly astounding to see it all connect back up like that. Would've never gotten that experience if I was chasing map icons and overly thirsty for the next chunk of story.

Actually slightly flabbergasted I’m arguing the completely non-controversial suggestion that games are a little more complex than ‘fun gameplay and maybe some other stuff if we’re lucky’ :pac:

I mean, if that’s what you see when you play Witcher 3... more power to you. Personally I think even the most basic analysis of Witcher 3 would show it’s a damn bit better than that. Great games are complex, multi-layered things - where elements like the art design, writing, music (which, as an aside since I’m playing it at the moment, is usually a bit overbearing in the W3, but whatever), character design, cinematic direction, attention to detail, UI and more work in harmony. Nobody’s denying gameplay is super important... but to downplay or dismiss the importance of everything else is frankly baffling.

So yes, I’m expecting - and pretty confident I’ll get - something more from Cyberpunk than cybernetic ninja sim. And no, that isn’t ‘desperately looking for art’ - it’s a mere simple acknowledgement that good games are better than just ‘fun gameplay’.

So the shnakes at CDPR snuck in the release date at last year's e3 trailer. 13th of April plus 3 days later....

My main issue with TW3 was that I wish some of the main quests were side quests, in that it constantly felt like to complete the simplest of tasks (eg. Go to Dandelion for information) the main mission quest was then split into so many smaller tasks that still all had to be completed, some of which didn't even lead anywhere. I know it all played into the narrative as a whole, but man there were so many times I just wanted to progress the story and spent so long running back and forth through Novigrad, sometimes having to check to see if I was still doing a story quest or had accidentally triggered a side quest because what I was doing felt so bland.

It felt like every main story quest had about 30 different parts to it, and some of those things could definitely have just been split into something that could have been a side quest instead. Not that they weren't worth doing, just that they completely broke and hampered the flow of the main storyline imo.

TW3 is the greatest game ever, no questioning this narrative :D

    Ha, dead right Brophy!

Penn, i remember that exact questions and was definitely one of the more tedious fetch quests even though there were some funny interactions, i felt i was running all over the gaf and going u could just find the right one.

Aye, I mean from when you're told you need to find Dandelion, a wiki says that these are the steps you need to take (spread over 6 main quests)

Go to the Rosemary and Thyme.
Help Zoltan chase off the tramps.
Search the ground floor for clues using your Witcher Senses.
    Read Dandelion's planner.
    Talk to Zoltan.
    Talk to Vespula.
    Talk to Elihal.
    Talk to Marabella.
    Let Marabella finish her lesson:
Wait until the lesson is over.
    Talk to Rosa var Attre.
Find a way into the var Attre villa.
    Follow the guard.
    Grab a wooden practice sword.
    Keep following the guard.
    Beat Rosa.
    Beat Rosa.
    Talk to Molly.
    Win the horse race.
Return to Novigrad on your own or with Voorhis.
    Consult with Zoltan.
Meet Zoltan in the Kingfisher Inn after sundown.
    Talk to Zoltan.
Go to the bathhouse and talk to Sigi Reuven.
Get undressed and put your clothing in the dresser.
    Follow Happen.
    Defeat the assassins.
    Visit Whoreson Junior's arena.
Pretend to be Zdenek to take part in the fights. (optionally)
(these only show up if you choose to fight in the arena)
    Talk to Igor.
Fight in the ring to prove you'd make a good bodyguard.
    Defeat your opponent.
    Defeat your opponent.
    Defeat your opponent.
    Survive the fight.
Search the arena for information about Whoreson.
    Read the documents you found.
User your Witcher Senses to find a way to access the secret stash.
    Search the secret stash.
    Read the mysterious letter.
    Find Whoreson Junior's casino.
Play cards with the casino guests.
Search the casino for information about Whoreson.
    Defeat Whoreson Junior's thugs.
Talk to the tied-up halfling in the casino.
    Find Whoreson Junior's hideout.
Search Whoreson Junior's hideout using your Witcher Senses.
Talk to Dijkstra about Whoreson's ties to the Redanians.
Talk to Vernon Roche in the partisan camp.
Meet Roche by the bridge in Oxenfurt.
Enter the chess club with Roche.
    Get inside Whoreson's hideout.
    Kill Whoreson Junior's guards.
    Search the guards' bodies
The next two objectives are mutually exclusive:
Use the key to open the door to Whoreson Junior's hideout.
Use the secret passage to reach Whoreson Junior's hideout.
    Search Whoreson Junior's residence.
Deal with Whoreson Junior (either spare him or kill him)
Tell Priscilla about your talk with Whoreson Junior.
    Get on the roof
    Get on the balcony
Enter through the window to Whoreson Junior's room
    Kill Whoreson Junior
    Escape from Whoreson Junior's hideout
Question Reuven about Dandelion's disappearance without raising any suspicions.
Return to Dijkstra when you're ready to help him.
    Follow Dijkstra.
Return to Dijkstra when you're ready.
Investigate the site of the break-in using your Witcher Senses.
    Follow the current.
User your Witcher Senses to search the sewer room for evidence.
Return to the bathhouse and summarize with Dijkstra.
Look for clues about the thieves in the bathhouse side rooms using your Witcher Senses.
    Go to Margrave Henckel's house.
Search Margrave Henckel's house using your Witcher Senses.
Solve the riddle from the mysterious note.
Investigate the other room using your Witcher Senses.
Search the hidden room using your Witcher Senses.
    Check what's going on downstairs.
Meet Triss at the Eternal Fire shrine near the harbor around midnight.
    Follow the witch hunter leader.
If Geralt failed at any point in the conversations:
    Kill the witch hunters.
    Kill Caleb Menge.
    Follow Triss.
Search Menge's desk for any clues.
If Geralt successfully got information from Menge:
(Optional) Sneak out of the witch hunters' outpost.
Find a way out of the witch hunters' outpost.
    Tell Dijkstra what you learned.
If Geralt didn't get the information about Dandelion from Menge:
Find the drop box using your Witcher Senses. Place the holy tome there to signal that you want to meet with the spy.
Be at the arranged meeting place at midnight.
(if you arrive early) Find a good place to hide and wait for the spy.
    Talk to Priscilla.
Tell Priscilla what you've learned about Dudu.
Take the script to Irina Renarde.
Head to the docks and hire ushers for the play.
(Optional) Recruit jugglers from the performing troupe called the Puffins.
Ger rid of the thugs lurking outside the Puffins' house.
    Defeat the strongmen from Metinna.
Talk to Irina Renarde and start the play.
Talk to Dudu in Irina Renarde's room.
(Optional) Ask Dijkstra to help rescuing Dandelion
If you tell Dijkstra what you are planning to do, he will give you six of his men instead of three.
Meet Zoltan at the site of the ambush
Use your Witcher Senses to pick up the trail
Ask if anyone from the camp has seen Dandelion's abductor
Explore the area in front of the hut in the woods
Enter the halflings' home via the secret passage
    Free Dandelion
    Defeat the witch hunter
    Untie Dandelion

Now obviously, some of those are quick things, but some of them certainly aren't and require a lot of back and forth or trying to find/follow things. It was definitely the main part of the game that really p*ssed me off. It's a fantastic game as a whole, no doubt about it. Was hard to get into, but once I did I enjoyed it a lot. But man parts of the main quest were just so bloated with busywork that could have been split off into optional side missions so you could do it at your leisure instead.

There are certainly plenty of issues with the Witcher 3 (which I think is great overall), big and small - whether that’s the messy inventory management, the bad case of ‘map icon syndrome’, the filler etc...

But the worst thing, absolutely, is some of the background music. There are times when you’re having a conversation and it sounds like there’s an annoying pack of lutists and pan pipers having an impromptu session just to the side of the frame. Thank god for audio options :pac:

Because your cars and bikes have AI, you can call for them like Roach and they'll drive themselves right up to you. Well that's just neat.

"Each apartment you own has a huge garage for your vehicle collection. You can then pick a main bike or car that arrives when you call it out in the world.
