Hey everybody, I am 21 years old and this is my story. I had a lot of ear infections as a child and i got grommets on 3 separate occassions. The last time i got them in i was 7 years old. The grommet in my right ear fell out when i was 17(i actually caught it). However, the grommet in my left ear is still there.
I suffered from ear infections every 4 weeks for the last 2 years. It has had such an impact on my life. I am just finished college but i can't go working for the summer because of this grommet. I use to do a lot of sport but i can't anymore.
The reason why this happened is that it was thought i was suffering from post viral stress syndrome due to constant tiredness. I was finally got referred to an ent specialist. It took 2 months to wait for the appointment. There i learned that the grommet in my left ear needs to be removed. I was told this at the end of april 2012 and i won't get it removed until july 2012.
It is super frustrating. If anyone can offer any advise in this situation. Is there an ent specialist i can see abroad which will perform the procedure in a more swift manner?????????????????????????????? I need to get this grommet removed a.s.a.p I need to get my life back.

I know this is very frustrating for you, and I sympathise with you whole heartedly as a sufferer of chronic infections myself..But, I would be thankful that you got an appointment that soon! The waiting list to get an ENT appointment here in Waterford is over 12 months, and to see community audiology is over 2 years! Just think of it this way, its only 4 more weeks or so until July! :)

I agree with Lardy, and also remember that you will need follow up appointments to make sure the eardrum has healed, so you would be better to stay locally.

I had the same problem with a grommet, one fell out and the other just stayed there. Fortunately by that time I was dealing with an audiologist and he was able to look and tell me in a couple of seconds what progress was being made. My GP didn't really know what he was looking for - understandably enough since its not a something that GPs deal with every day.
