New Parquet Courts is A Savage album

I see what you did there!
Their November jaunt in the Academy should also be A Savage gig.

Last year’s album with Daniel Luppi was also really good. Sort of like a take on the Velvet Underground & Nico.

    1)Typhoon- Offerings
    2)First Aid Kit-Ruins
    3)Just Mustard-Wednesday
    4)Lebanon Hanover-Let them be Alien
    5)Shame -Songs of Praise

    Been a very disappointing year so far for me. Lots of really underwhelming albums. Anyway, here's what I've really liked;
    1. 'There's a Riot Going On' - Yo La Tengo
    2. 'Singularity' - Jon Hopkins
    3. '7' - Beach House
    4. 'In the Rainbow Rain' - Okkervil River (This, too, is patchy)

And that's about it. Tried to get my head around bands with a buzz - including Shame - but it ain't happening. MGMT album was poor, Buffalo Tom pretty average, new Low Anthem underwhelmed.

    for me i've come back a lot to;

    Caroline rose - loner
    Parquet courts - wide awake
    A.A.I. - 2012-17
    Amen Dunes - freedom
Khruangbin - cond todo el mundo

Another vote for Parquet Courts. The more I listen to it to the better it gets. It's probably their strongest release yet, even though I really thought their previous album had some great songs too.

Obviously, they sound a lot like their influences - really strongly like The Minutemen to my ears at times - but they write sturdy and strong songs and I think they've got something unique sounding going on in general.

My top 5 of this year so far would look like this:

    U.S. Girls - In a Poem Unlimited
    Sleep - The Sciences
    Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
Anna von Hausswolff - Dead Magic
    A.A.L. (Against All Logic) - 2012-2017

I'm hoping the next half of the year will throw up some better releases.

New 'Oneohtrix Point Never' LP 'Age Of' is a huge recommendation from me. I pre-ordered the vinyl April just gone from the Bleep store with the lovely t-shirt bundle and they sent it monday and it arrived this morning, its officially out this Friday. This is a fantastic modern forward pushing and also accessible alt/pop record and will transport you out of this world for over 40 brilliant minutes.

Tracks like 'Toys 2', 'We'll Take it', it's all just so absolutely brilliant. The end of 'Toys 2' would have you in near nostalgic tears, with the punctuating emotional synthy stab hits, then you have 'We'll Take it' a track that sounds like the national anthem for Predator drones written by one of the murderous computer killing machines whose also very good at music.

Really really really good. Great album to lose yourself over the forthcoming holiday weekend what with the good weather and everything. I'm already lost in it.

So good mosstin, I might have to buy a second copy I have the arse nearly burnt out of this already. CD comes with a lovely booklet too and great artwork. Physical copies are well worth the purchase for this.

Dunno about that. Oneohtrix Point Never has gone far enough already. When you let the actual music do the talking, then doesn't really matter what you call yourself or your band. I think that may be the whole reason behind the name. It's just a fantastic record. Give it a blast, see what you think.

I know the Paraqet Courts record is getting good reviews but I cannot warm to it..well actually havent listened to it ..only a few singles.Their early music was brilliant but I cannot find any redeeming qualities in a song like wide awake.

    From this

    to this

They are wide awake ..ok then.

That's one of the weaker songs on the album IMO.

I finally got around to listening to this this morning.

And it was not worth the wait.

I have a mate who's mad into them and I never got it. Had hoped from some of the reviews that this might click with me... it did not...

I’ve listened to it twice and it did nothing for me. It sort of reminded me of the more experimental parts of Bon Ivor’s latest album less the essential harmonic bits. I’ll give it one more go.

Re : Oneohtrix Point Never's 'Age Of', this is still just getting better and better for me. There are layers and moments I keep discovering while listening to this. I can't stop listening to 'Same', and that did nothing for me on the first few listens. There is a part on that track halfway through, where it just takes off with a total woooomph. It harkens me back to the best moments from Tears for Fears or Depeche Mode 80's memories. Somebody added it to this electro track on youtubes which is great.

Course it won't be for everybody, but I love it, and I must check out that Bon Ivor LP too after what said here.

Another great record just out which really mirrors this is 'James Ferraro' - "Four Pieces for Mirai"
If you are into OPN like me, definitely check out that new record too. Great great stuff

Hilary Woods debut solo album, 16 years after JJ72's last release, has come from nowhere and really taken me by surprise.

I think this song is a lot better.

It's not epoch defining brilliant or anything but I like it a lot. Though I can understand if people like their guitar rock more knotty and noisy - and there's nothing wrong with that - then the latter day sound of the band may not necessarily hold a lot of appeal.

Good to see a bit of debate. Almost reminds of the days when Boards was semi-alive!

That is exactly the album it's put me in mind of - completely right. Wasn't a great fan of it either but I'm definitely willing to let the Oneoh work its magic on me.

Any opinions on the new Beach House album?

I've listened to it a few times and I can't tell if it's great or just sounds great.

I'm partial to this tune though -

I like it a lot. Bought the vinyl version, though and there's no ****ing DL code with it. Really bugs me.

I haven't heard this album but I can extrapolate from their previous outings and know this will (might) be nice to for a while but ultimately not all that satisfying for repeat listens.Thats a decent tune though,a decent video might help it along.
I did like this style of music more a few years back, the likes of porcelain raft, echo lake, elephant(uk) being some that spring to mind.
Dreampop is grand for a listen but does not seem to have longevity, not really any albums from the genre that you would put in your top ten from last ten years?

I agree with it sounding great with the change in producer being enough to differentiate it from recent releases. Even given their consistency, 3 albums in 3 years is a lot so I appreciate the subtle change in sound.

I think Dive is my favourite at the moment.

I would have thought Teen Dream would be quite the contender for albums of the 2010's? (I am looking forward to the future lists as we come to the end of the decade)

I have always studiously avoided labels like 'dreampop' to be honest so I couldn't really say which bands fit that category. I admire the work of Beach House but I don't love them. Their most recent is probably my favourite as an overall album, though.
Saw them at Vicar Street a couple of years ago - very good - so have no real desire to see them a second time this year.

New Gruff Rhys album recorded with a full orchestra "Babelsberg" - very lush production, songs are his usual languid style, though perhaps nothing as left field as on some of his previous albums or with SFA.

Highlight for me is Negative Vibes (eh, not a cover of the Damien Dempsey song!). Here he is doing it with a ukulele orchestra a couple of years ago:

DIIV's 'Oshin' and a few Wild Nothing albums are up there with my favourites.

Whatever you think of Pitchfork, I find their lists throw up some good things:

I set on the road journey with three new albums to listen to DIIV-oisin,Tiny Moving Parts-swell and highly suspect.
I gave all three a whirl,DIIV good but cant really remember any of the songs or lyrics ,maybe on next listen. Not sure I would call them dreampop, more like have elements of it and shoegaze. Tiny Moving Parts well they sound like the hoteliers, kinda generic emo rock, wouldn't recommend. The highly suspect album the boy who died wolf is from last year and its grungy rock, the opening track is very impressive.Gets a tad boring towards the middle..pretty good album though.
Also playing Idles Brutalism alot, amazing album.

Track from Highly suspect-My name is Human

Ya not diggin it M? Ahh may not be for you, I loving it anyways. Bought the CD version as well because ,the vinyl is being torn up. CD versions are sold out on Bleep already so have to wait for a re-up. It's the perfect headphone record for me so might be worth a shot giving it a blast on that. The vinyl version also has extra bits on some tracks not on the mp3's, be interesting to see if on the CD's.
"We'll Take It" is also being released as a single with extra tracks on July 13th, 'Trance 1' is on that which was the Japanese bonus track on the CD's
