Electric gates retro fitting motor to timber gates

hi i have a set of metal framed gates with timber on them. The gates are located at the bottom of a steep tarmac drive and the only way that they can open is out to the road. Would the surface mount(above ground) motors look too ugly outside the gates or would i be better cutting the drive and fitting underground boxes.…
