I'm a little confused by something on the German version of Rosetta stone. I would have understood that sentence to mean "these people (pl.) have been dead since many years ago". However, in context it seems to mean "this person (sing.) has been dead since many years ago. I would have thought "Dieser Mensch ist seit vielen Jahren tot" was the appropriate phrasing. Is there some grammatical rule I am missing out on?

Nope ...you have it correctly.

Diese Menschen is plural and dieser Mensch is singular.
I don't have a copy of Rosetta Stone, so I can't tell you where the mistake lies.
