We had it in the back of our school journal all through primary school!

So yes, I know it :pac:

Despite the beatings it failed to stick. I probably know enough of the 'mouth shapes' to fake it though.

I know it, and its meaning, though we were never taught it in school (my suspicion: few teachers outside of Irish teachers knew what it meant).

I made an effort to learn it myself, ages ago. I wouldn't say I'm particularly proud of it, but I think it's a good national anthem. It's just stirring and militaristic enough.

Yep, I know it, on a night out recently we started singing it for the mess and I was surprised at how many people stumbled after the first few lines. We learned it in 5th and 6th class, now if you asked me what any of it meant well that would be an entirely different story altogether :o

    Don't it now go like...

    Deutschland, Deutschland über alles
    Über alles in der Welt
Wenn es stehte zun Schutz und Trutze
    Brüderlich zusammen hält
Von der Maas bis an die Memel
Von der Etsch bis an den Belt
    Deutschland, Deutschland über alles
    Über alles in der Welt

    Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue
    Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
    Sollen in der Welt behalten
    Ihren alten schönen Klang
    Uns zu edler tat begeistern
    Unser ganzes Leben lang
    Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue
    Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang

    Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
    Für das deutsche Vaterland
    Danach lasst uns alle streben
    Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand
    Einigkei und Recht und Freiheit
    Sind des Glückes Unterpfand
    Blüh im Glanze dieses Glückes
    Blühe deutsches Vaterland

I did know the Irish one but I guess we better start learning the German one or a new EU one soon!

I can sing the full anthem in English. Can't say I know it in Irish though. I remember our class in school asked out iris teacher to teach it to us. It wasn;t on the curriculum though bah.

I do get a few strange looks when I sing it in English at football and soccer matches. Beats not knowing it at all though I suppose.

A lot of people up north sing it in English I noticed. Curiously enough, it was written in English and later translated into Irish by Liam Ó Rinn.

We learned it in primary school, but mainly by sound and not by the words :P. I don't really like it as an anthem, tbh. It's hard to sing - if you start low, you can't get the "Ní fhágfar..." bit and if you start high, you can't get the "Faoin lámhach na bpiléar" line.

Also, that line in the middle " Ní fhág-far faoin tir-eáin ná faoin tráil" makes you sound like a foghorn! :pac:

It was written in 1907 to honour soldiers who fought and died for Ireland. How the fcuk does that make it a terrorist song ? Anyway, good and all as it is, it will hopefully be replaced by "A Nation Once Again" within the next 20 or 30 years.

I love that clip. That's how an atmosphere at every football game should be. Not some sanitised corporate sit down shut up football fans you get at Premier League games nowadays (I know this is from the SPL but still).

Myself I know it in English, mainly through going to watch Celtic though I was never taught it at home. As I never learnt Irish in school, I don't know it. I'd love to learn it and I've tried to in the past but my pronunciation of Irish is shocking enough as it is and am comic relief for my cousins out there when I do go back home to Ireland (my family live in the Gaeltacht but still Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste ná Béarla cliste). Having no grasp of an Irish education makes myself one of the many Irish diaspora very difficult to learn the national anthem in Irish, although I'm sure many of the Irish born will say so as well :pac:.

Strange thing for you to say. It was custom when I was growing up. Every dance, disco and hop plus all the singing pubs would finish the night with it preparatory to throwing out time. You could stand or sit as you pleased and generally people would hush for it.

For me it signaled trepidation, and then delight or heart failure as the full lights would come on with it and reveal whether I'd landed myself with a spotty oik or a John Travolta lookalike to walk me home. :D
