Lads.... Spain were nearly scoreless the last night against China. China, who are a lot worse than Hungary. And Spain, who are favourites for the tournament. They also had a very decent team on the pitch. Are you gonna say that they've no chance based on that performance too?

Fair enough Ireland aren't playing great and there are a lot of aspects to the game that need to be questioned. But I still fully believe that we will have a good go at it in the finals.

Cox on Keane off, here's hoping he can getting something

    Decent save from Bogdan.

Great effort from Walters, hard angle to score from.

Oh well at least you're honest about it. I think there a lotta Irish people who don't even notice that they prefer to give out than to support. People who find it more therapeutic to shout at the tv than to cheer us on.

    How come you don't care?

Ten years of watching Ireland at home drained the enthusiasm out of me :D

If they qualify out of that group I'd be genuinely amazed. I just think that they've been fortunate on a number of occasions throughout the qualifying campaign. Fair enough that they've dug out the results but it's not as if they've been incredibly solid at the back. I still think that they've conceding way too many chances and that defensively that's just not good. They're relying more on individual pieces of excellent blocking/tackling rather than collectively good defending (see Dunne vs Russia and for a more recent example Ward's sliding tackle in the 1st half).

Anyone who would not question Irelands performance so far in this game are seriously deluded.

6 days before a major championship we should be buzzing, knocking the ball around with the shackles off.

We are being played off the park completely by a team who should be in holiday mode.

This team "who should be in holiday mode" actually beat the Czech republic away last week. They are technically better than us but it is still 0-0. Let's be realistic here, we are no world beaters.

    We will win this 1-0.

    This is humiliating.

0-0 away to Hungary is humiliating? You're watching Ireland not Spain, we're not world beaters.

Cox and Walters seem to provide more of a threat together.

The result in this irrelevant tbh, especially with all these subs being made.

Except Spain and Germany (a few posts before) have shown they can go through the gears.

This is just more of the same from Ireland.

Would 3 draws be enough to get through the group? :pac:

The second favourites to win the tournament conceded 5 to a team as bad as Hungary last week. If we have cause to be negative, the Germans must be having palpitations.

Yeah he does look rusty. I'm more concerned about St. Ledger, seems short on confidence.

There is an awful lot of negativity in this thread.

Hungary are a very good young team. They won 19 points in the Euro qualifiers, have only 100 odd caps between them, and they're playing at home. Ireland have been riddled with injuries and are technically inferior (especially our midfield). Given all that, Ireland are doing okay.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,184 ✭✭✭Patsy fyre

McGeady seems to be playing through the middle.

I am behind the players, not their fault that so many of them shouldn't be on the pitch. Trapattoni is badly out of his depth though, football has moved on from catenaccio.
You obviously didn't see any of Chelsea in the latter stages of the Champion's league.

Have to laugh when a grown man commentating uses the phrase "piledriver" when referring to a shot on goal.

Mathematically we could come second with 2 draws and a loss.

Some people are completely delusional alright. A few days before we a start a competition we haven't qualified in for 24 years, nil all away in a friendly and people are getting on their backs like we were losing 3-0 to andorra!
Expecting us to be winning 2-0 playing like barca, wake up guys, this is ireland, we are indeed lucky to have qualified, yes we aren't the best team but we give it our best so the constant moaning isn't helping!

Am I the only one who thinks Duff is not good enough anymore for the starting squad? The subs seem to have made a massive difference. Walters looks a real livewire :)

Switzerland are a very good side, much better than Hungary.

The Hungarians would kill to have the likes of Inler, Stocker, Derdiyok, Barnetta, Lichsteiner, Benaligo, Sommer, Frei, Mehmedi, Xhaka and Shaqiri.

Hungary's only good player (At the moment) is Dszadzudzak (Or however it is spelt)

Where's the weakened team riddled by injuries?

Ireland have played like this since Trap took over. This is a friendly, do you expect him to change everything six days before the first game? Get real.

Also as I understand it Germany had a weakened side out that day. This is presumably Irelands's first XI.

FFS we have qualified for the Euro's for the first time since 1988. We are not brilliant nor are we claiming to be brilliant, we have limited pick compared with other nations, get behind the team and support them.

There seems to be alot of people in here who cannot wait for us to get knocked out so they can come in here and say told ya so!

So you'd leave John O'Shea out of the Ireland team for a right winger who can't get a game for his club?

    And Robbie Keane.

Robbie Keane is useless and playing in the equivalent of League 1.

Had to make a bit of a ninja edit because I got mixed up with France struggling against Iceland :p. Still, if Germany get torn up by the Swiss in a warm-up, a nil all with Hungary isn't the end of the world for Ireland.

Interesting team, but no Robbie Keane  53 goals and he's dropped? Harsh!

Secondly, lots of your team were not regular starters for their clubs last season (Clark, Coleman, Holohan). Wilson & Gibson are decent at best, and are no better than the starters we have.

I would like McCarthy or Holohan in midfield, but Trap achieved qualification so deserves support. It may be ugly, but it's a lot better than not qualifying.

The result is irrelevant, it's the toxic football we are playing.

The result is irrelevant???? We've qualified for the first major competition since 2002, with the limited pool of players that we have ... but the result is irrelevant?

Would you rather the squad played expressive, beautiful football all summer in The Phoenix Park?

    Good point.

Oh wait.. It's not. 7 goals in qualifying? Useless.

Call it what you want. I don't care, its got us to the finals and I for one am delighted.

Ireland playing at a major tournament is a great occasion and both the fans and the team will give a great account of the country in Poland!

I really do wonder what people expect sometimes.

Do people know what being a supporter entails? It's almost like people want us to fail so they can slaughter the players, Trap etc etc.

Some people really need to look at themselves.

I think his loan spell at Aston Villa earlier this year and the qualifying campaign for the euro's proved hes far from useless, and still has a lot to give.

Ah yeah you're right in fairness he has flattered to deceive at international level, barring those 53 goals.

Looked pretty sharp for Aston Villa a few months ago though.

Lets be honest, Marc Wilson is a long way better than Stephen Ward, and Darron Gibson definitely has the edge over Keith Andrews.
