In fairness , on that break Ireland got back in numbers amazingly well for the 89th minute. They should have no fitness problems at least.

Hard to tell with all the subs.

Ireland much improved in the 2nd half after Hungary dominated the first, could have nicked it in the end. If there's one thing to take out of the game Walters or Cox have to start ahead of Doyle.

That's an awkward line. 22.5% really isn't a lot. They'll probably manage 80% alright but all it need is Ireland to have a good 5 minutes at some point.

The lads had a decent test there and it doesn't look like we suffered any injuries.

    I'll take that.

O'Shea way off the pace there for the late nemeth chance, the guy (even when fit) is a liability and will cost us in the euros - mark my words

We know we are better than what we showed tonight, that's why some of us are having a little pop. We are entitled to our opinion on the matter, just like everyone else on here. Every single one of us will be 100% behind the team come Sunday night but that doesn't mean we can't comment on a pretty bad performance tonight. We will need to improve a lot next week and I fully expect us to do so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭edgecutter

Subs made a difference. Thought Walters finishing was poor, but if you need a target man he should be ahead of Doyle. Hopefully trap has noticed this.

The manager will have a few ideas of his starting eleven after that. I expect changes.

A useful exercise that. Not one of our better performances, but a good workout and hopefully no injuries which doesn't seem to be the case!!

Now roll on the real action!!

    Wheres Shane Long????

Our midfield doesn't hold a proper shape when defending. Sometimes pushing up even though the defence stays deep, sometimes dropping deep, often not moving as a unit. This defensive system that everything is sacrificed for does not translate into good organised team defending on the pitch.

This is not just happening tonight because it is a friendly, it works out the same way every time we play against any team that are half decent on the ball and up for the game. The acres of space we've seen for the opposition tonight is the same as we've seen in many competitive games.

And for anybody who thinks by saying this I'm not a real supporter or want Ireland to lose, kindly go fùck yourself.

Not the worst result in the world. Hungary are a young team with a big appetite. Hopefully it gave us the kick needed before the tournament proper.

Though the clean sheet was down to luck, rather than a defensive masterclass.

Glad there is no injuries, at least.

Long Keane are different kind of players to Cox and Long imo, but agree that Long and Keane would still be a better option than Doyle starting, hes been shockingly out of form for a long time now

This. Really surprised that people have overlooked this over the past year regarding Ireland games. Fair play for setting up like that, looking to shut out your opposition and keeping x amount of clean sheets, but when it's not done at all convincingly then there has to be some concerns.

I only caught the second half but I thought it was a decent performance from Ireland though there was some worry defensively. Some nice attacking play but Cox was looking sharper than Walters tonight. It's the second friendly where Walters has lacked a finishing touch and I'd say it'll knock him down the pecking order if Cox is fit.

I like to be a positive guy 90% of the time, but it reminds me of the Jack days where there is a serious 'glass half full brigade', whose automatic function is to call someone a 'begruder', 'moaner', so on, for fairly pointing out a weakness.

These people are not usually to be seen at an LOI match, either.

Ireland now have 10 clean sheets in the last 14 matches.

That's not down to luck. That's a good team.

The invention of football manager was an awful thing I think. There are so many people on here who think they know more than one of the most successful managers in football over the last 30 years.

And if those people just stopped and thought for a minute, there is no way they would do well with Andrews, Whelan and Gibson as your choices for central midfield in football manager but Trap somehow got them to the Euros. And he did if for real!!!:D

could have lost it right at the end there, super ball played through, he could have ran on with it for a 1 on 1, dissapointing game but im sure we'll raise our game for when it matters

It's partly down to us not coming up against proper strikers too. The amount of chances people miss against us is both hilarious and terrifying.
