nice to see no injuries, as Dunne just said most of the players really have the Croatia game on their minds and not this one. At least we have some options if Robbie and co cant come up with the goods.

I think we play the 4-4-2 system so often and so well that we just rely on the last ditch effort to just do enough.

The invention of football manager was an awful thing I think. There are so many people on here who think they know more than one of the most successful managers in football over the last 30 years.

And if those people just stopped and thought for a minute, there is no way they would do well with Andrews, Whelan and Gibson as your choices for central midfield in football manager but Trap somehow got them to the Euros. And he did if for real!!!:D

I know, it's awful! You even have people thinking Chelsea played catenaccio this season!

Some good performances in the 2nd half, Walters looked good and McGeady threatened. Gibbo played a few good passes when he came on too.

Only need to draw all our group matches 0-0 and we might have a chance of going through :pac:

I have to ask, do you take a perverse type of pleasure in being repetitive, boring and miserable?

    2 things will happen

1/ Ireland will have the usual snoooze fest in all the games.

    2/ get trounced

sorry i cant be more enthusiastic but watching kylie minogue took my attention tonight than the game, can imagine the same next week.

I think what Chelsea played in the semi final and final is pretty much the finest example all season ...

It's even on the wiki page ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenaccio

"Furthermore, in the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League, Chelsea's unlikely win of the trophy was largely based upon defensive discipline. The view that Catenaccio tactics were being used following the appointment of Intermin Manager Roberto Di Matteo became prevalent during the Semi-Final against Barcelona. The Catalan's enjoyed 70% of Possession at Stamford Bridge and and enjoyed an icredible 73% in the second leg, yet Chelsea progressed 3-2 on aggregate."

Just back from training, did any Irish players get injured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,964 ✭✭✭✭klose

Mcgeady did great has to be said, I've no beef with him being ahead of mcclean. However if hunt is used ahead of mcclean on the bench I will be dissapoint..

No by the looks of it. The biggest positive we can take from the game.

    They all look disabled
But they can't park in the handicap zone

From skimming it that article seems to have just lumped any team that won playing overly defensive football into "catenaccio"

In fairness to hunt he can put a great ball in from any angle but his awareness is very lacking.

In spite of all the optimists in this thread i'm sadly inclined to agree with the naysayers. Judging by that performance against Hungary, who can be classed as an almost mild Croatia, we'd be extremely lucky to sneak a draw against them and then god knows what'll happen against Italy. Parking the bus can only work for so long against top teams, all it takes is one good shot and we're done.

Oh god. My stream is after changing over to Rolf Harris and Lenny Henry singing 'Two Little Boys'. The unimpressed look on Liz's face is hilarious.

Setanta doing their usual 2nd rate coverage. Don't like what's his name cutting across Brian Kerr to make his point.

It was a friendly, the players got 90 mins out of it, the result was never gonna matter (unless we had a hugely embarassing result a la Italy last Friday). Be a completely different kettle of fish on Sunday.

Just in town today and seeing little stalls on Henry St selling flags, hats etc for the Euros and most shops pushing any Irish merchandise really got me buzzing inside. Can't wait for Sunday :D

It's on the wiki page, and? It may be a defensive display but a strong focus towards defending does not automatically mean it's catenaccio.

It's embarrassing that people seem to be settling for just being there rather than actually believing we can do something. We are going there to win the tournament, however long a shot that might be, that is our goal, same as everyone else.

It's being a realist we are 4th favorites in a group of 4, realistically we shouldn't get out of the group, I'm going to enjoy it no matter what 3 nights out and if something more happens great.

And who here was saying that we wouldn't be going with the aim of winning the tournament? Nobody has been making the case that we should be just making up the numbers.

The argument on this thread has been between fans who are criticizing the team before they've even kicked a ball in the finals, and those fans who actually want to support the team, instead of just b*tching and moaning about them.

    Nobody here has said that.

Is it an achievement to qualify? Yes
Did I celebrate when we did? Yes
    Can we win it? Yes
    Will we? Who knows
Will I still be proud to support Irish football if we lose 3 games? Yes

Take of you're Eammon Dunphy , sour puss, overly negative hat for a minute and be thankful that for the first time in 10 years we have a reason to look forward to a major international tournament.

I have spent 2 years or so pointing out the limitations and fears about Trap's setup but it seems rather pointless to start waxing lyrical about the setup at this stage.

Nothing is going to change at the tournament unless we are looking for an equaliser.

TBH, it was the lack of innovation and passing against Bulgaria, Slovakia., Cyprus etc that I had issues with. I'm not sure we were ever going to try anything other than be "resolute" against the teams we are up against Cro/Ita/Spa no matter the manager.

Dunphy (rightly) criticised our performance against Egypt 22 years ago, and got vilified in the process by a lot of people who never even kicked a ball in their lives, unlike him. Sure, he is full of it at times, but he was right on that occasion.

By all means they deserve a fair bit of praise, but there seems to be people here - and in 'real life' - who are not wise enough to spot fair criticism.
