Looking for a Hawke Sidewinder 3-12x50 or 4-16x50.

Can someone point me in the direction of a good Hawke dealer that would be great!

I contacted a UK dealer and was informed that they can't export scopes 4x mag and upwards without some paperwork?

Thanks lads, I hadn't seen those, I'll give Sean a buzz too to see what price he can do.

Is it worth the extra few quid for the 50mm over the 44mm?

Also will the 3-12 do or should I go for the 4-16 mag?

If the current mounts allow, and you are not changing them, go for the larger objective lens. Also if you are going for variable power why not have the 4-16.

I could understand if you were considering 3-12 or 8-32. You know, a big leap, but there is feck all difference between 3 power and 4 power. However on the other end the 16 will give better sight for longer ranges.

At the end of the day i would sooner have it than be looking for it. Plus the price for the Sidwinder 30 is the same irrespective of mag range (i think). Have bought 2 of them of different power, and no price difference.

Spot on Ezridax, just wanted to make sure, haven't got the gun yet, waiting a few months for it now but I'm told it should be here shortly.

Any recommendation for mounts while you're there, not sure what height I'll need, should I wait until I have the rifle and scope?

I'd like to get a 1 piece mount if I can, I know its not needed but I just think the look tidier.

In order of prices from lowest to highest (IIRC);

• EGW (Evolution Gun Works)
• Weaver
• Burris Xtreme Tactical
• Burris Signature rings
• Warne
• Leupold

Oddly enough the order of price is very close to the order of quality in which i would rank them. Not saying the cheaper ones are bad or anything, but i would sooner go for Near or Nightforce if money allowed, however to get shooting i would use sportsmatch if they worked.

Waiting is the best way to ensure a perfect fit. A method i use to judge height, whether you have the rifle or not (but easier with the rifle) is as follows.

• Take the diameter of the objective lense, say 50mm.
• Add 3mm for the width of the housing and 3mm for the minimum height off the barrel.
• That gives 56mm.
• Split that which gives our height from the barrel to the centre lineof the scope tube. So 28mm.
• Now measure the height of the rail.
• Say its 7mm.
• Take the 7mm from the 28 mm leaving you with 21mm and thats th height of the rings you need. (21mm = 7/8" (or a tad less)

Once you have this number you smply need to find out how the manufacturer measures their rings. For example some measure their's from the base of the ring (the falt piece that sits on the rail/receiver) to the bottom of the curve (where the tube sits). Some measure from the base of the ring to the centre of the ring diameter (centre line of the tube if you will). See picture for two reference points.

Without having anything against a one piece mount, as in they work as well as a rail & rings, i always prefer a rail, and a good set of rings. It's a personal choice, but i always feel like i have more "maneuverability" with a rail, and rings.

If going for a one piece try and afford the best you can to make sure the "pedigree" is in it. I always rated Warne as a good manufacturer. However i once had a poor rail that was out by only 1.2mm, but caused me no end of hardship trying to sight in the rifle. Could not figure out where i was loosing MOA. Eventually i checked all dimensions with a calipers, and found the issue. Quick file job later, and job done.

Thanks for the info Ezridax, the scope is going on a Weirauch .22 Hw100kt pcp air rifle hopefully the dealer will have it in before the week is out!

I'll do a bit more research on the mounts but I'm going to go for the 4-16x50 sidewinder.

Perfectly.

I had one on a .308 and it tracks perfectly. Never lost zero, and with a 30 year warranty it gives good peace of mind if anything does go wrong.
