Are you part of this campaign or were you part of a previous one?

    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttttttt ??

Presentation for the current campaign ? Hopefully not - I have my interview this Friday and this is the first I have heard of the presentation. I also know someone who knows somebody on the panel - and I didnt hear of a presentation through that channel either.

From what I hear the interview is based solely on what you put on the form ....

Yes, it is an interview with a presentation section involved. They allow you to present with the help of stuff you bring on paper or I think I remember a flip chart being there if you'd prefer that (you'd want to double check on the flip chart though)

It felt very time constrained so I'd recommend practicing a lot beforehand. Don't have too much in your presentation. Have a good conclusion or recommendation at the end of it. Then just try to have informed but short opinions on questions you think you might get asked about it. Also be ready to be open to questions you just couldn't think of.

Are you sure there's a presentation in this particular competition? I've helped a couple of people prep for it and neither of them mentioned having to do a presentation...

OK, I think I know what's going on here - there's a NEW and COMPLETELY UNRELATED competition for AO across the civil service after being announced (http://www.publicjobs.ie/publicjobs/campaignAdvert/9004.htm).

This competition may well involve an aptitude test, and an interview including presentation.

However this is not the AO (Revenue) competition which is subject of this thread, and there is NOT a presentation as part of that competition, or the various candidates who have already attended, or are due to attend, for interview would know about it!

I'd suggest a separate thread for the other new competition, to avoid confusion since the format/stages seem to be different.

Anyone with insider knowledge know if AO (ICT) might be offered again ?

Not as difficult as honours leaving cert oral Irish in my experience. And bear in mind it's a pass/fail, so you just need to muddle through really!

I was a candidate in a previous AO ICT competition. Didn't get it.

Back to the AO comp...how did ppl find the interview? I found it very tough, really grilled me!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 declanmofffet

I had my interview last week and found it very tough as well Eddie. I don't want to say too much in case I give myself away, but I come from the private sector and have had a dozen or so interviews over the years, in various countries, and found this one of the toughest, if not the toughest. The speed of questioning, and manner in which the interview board angle questions is quite challenging. For those yet to be interviewed, they give you little time to think, and follow up questions with what might seem like an unrelated question – I hope this aids your preparation and does not add to your nervousness. I found it difficult to get into specifics as time was tight, so bear that in mind. I followed the generous advice given on this thread, so thanks to all for that.

All that said, however the interview board came across as very nice people, very professional, and I felt fair given that they have a difficult job to do. I have had a sheltered life in that I have had very little interaction with the public sector, but if the interview board are a reflection of the public sector as a whole then we are very lucky to have them working for the state. If I am unsuccessful in my application, I take solace in that those who interviewed me will pick the best persons for the job.

In summary, I found myself a bit muddled by the interview, and didn’t get across all the points I would have liked, part of that might have been through lack of preparation or nerves. Would be interested to hear other people’s comments.

Tá an scrudú gaelige agam an sechtaine seo chugainn, so feicimid ansin.

The conventional wisdom, and I'd agree with it as someone who has been lucky enough to make it through a couple of these interviews onto panels, is that if you don't come out of it feeling like you were challenged then you haven't done well.

on this note I was talking to a accountant with 10 years experience last week, who has his own practice and experience in running a medium size company that didnt even get an interview. He was disgusted. I wonder did anyone get an interview that wasnt just a graduate with a couple of years experience?

  • Registered Users Posts: 26 clio15

hopefully we will hear early next week.
maybe that person was too qualified id say its mainly newly qualifed accountants and tax consultants ?

Results out, I placed but not that high, down at 20+, they'll hardly go down that far unless there's one location they can't find anybody for; anybody know the story with last years panel, how far they went down that? They're looking for people for Dublin Waterford and Kilkenny at the moment

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 eddie_1498

same here, mid 20's - couldn't be that many jobs going??

Well the thing is with these panels you never know, they might not get the people higher up the panel for certain locations, if you're interested in posts outside of Dublin; I know Revenue also have quite a bit of scope to recruit within their ECF (staff numbers ceiling) so they might end up taking 25 or 30 from this panel over the next year or two. Might have forgotten all about this and then a year down the road you get that call

anyone know how far the panel they usually go? or how long the panel lasts?

Panel will last for 2 years. Considering the last panel ran out - I would say anybody on the panel has a decent chance of getting called. Remember that some people ahead of you on the list will be holding out for a non-Dublin position.

To the posters above, i would be very happy indeed with a mid twenties ranking. I didnt place on the panel, which is frustrating considering the amount of preparation I had done

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭littlelady81

does anyone know how many were placed on panel? I was placed mid thirties I suppose its better than nothing! I wonder does anyone really know how many positions will come on stream in the next two years?

Given my experience of these panels in the past and the AO Revenue one last year, I'd say there's around 40 on the panel. Around 117 interviewed, so around 1 in 3 placed. Like a previous poster said, I'd say there's a good chance everyone on the panel will get the call at some stage, although could be a way down the road and maybe not for a location of interest. The recent Civil Service wide specialist AO comp also mentioned some may be going to Revenue, not sure how this will work, there's still some waiting on last years panel as far as I know, now our panel and then the other recent Civil Service wide AO panel

Good time to get foot in the door in Revenue and Civil Service in general. Should be a relatively large number of promotions in coming years compared to the last few years; Revenue is also advantageous over the central Departments in Dublin due to the geographical spread and variety of units and type of work
