At what stage do you provide written references?

E.G. I come 9th on the panel, they offer me Sligo and I say "yes". Is it then? Just wondering as some individuals wont want their employers to know obviously!

Yes it happens right at the end, after the offer - ie the offer is made and accepted, subject to references etc

References being those from previous jobs?, not current?

I say because some can be quite bitter when key staff leave. Happened to me. Employer didn't even say goodbye and he wouldn't give me the training record for a year despite being there for >5 yrs

I'm trying to remember, in my case it was 2 former employers, but only because I'd moved jobs in between the competition happening and a job offer coming. Have they not asked for the names of referees yet? That's how I remember it - you'd given them names at the time on the form, but you were only required to get them when the job offer was made and being accepted.

While they may not be delighted to be losing a staff member, if that staff member is crossing the road to become a revenue auditor (and realistically, holding back a reference isn't going to prevent that) I'd have thought they'd probably see the benefit of parting on good terms..!!

    Good point!

I'd get a reference alright, even if pissed off no one would be that shirt sighted.

In terms of application there was no reference to references (interesting grammer there).

anyone hear word of a general AO competition coming up in September 2014?

and if so , is it internal or open?

also heard word of an internal HEO on the cards for early 2015.

    anyone?

Is there such a thing as an internal AO comp?! The whole point of AO is that it's a recruitment grade..!

    I stand corrected Barney !!:>

have you heard anything about a general AO comp? While I totally agree with the specialisation route which the recent AO comps have adopted, it'd be nice for general all-rounders (like me) to get a chance too ?:>

The last two AO competitions have been for specific types of grads (Tax, Economics, Accounting, HR etc)

I thought that recruitment was only being allowed in these cases during the moratorium because of the need for specific skill sets i.e. no more recruiting general AOs.

Thanks Onanon! That's much longer than all the previous competitions, I'll have to try and forget about it until then!

Got placed early twenties. I wonder what my chances of a role in Limerick or Ennis are?

Check which government departments have offices there and ask to be placed in one of them. If you are placed in another location but same Department, then you could try to transfer in a while.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Boomtownrat81

What happens if you turn down roles in Dublin etc? Do they keep you on the panel until you accept?
Should I tell them before any offers that only Limerick or Ennis is an option or would that not sit well?

Hard to say really. As this was a Revenue competition and it was for an Audit and Compliance role, I think you can rule out the CGs in Limerick as a likely destination. That restricts you to the Limerick and Clare Districts, or possibly Large Enterprise Branch in Limerick as possible Limerick/Ennis locations.

The number of AO vacancies that arise in those locations will depend upon various factors such as:

    A) How long will your panel remain open? The longer the better from your perspective as it gives time for people to retire or leave
    B) How many sitting AOs (or HEOs) in those locations will be successful in the ongoing internal (or the recent open) AP competition?
    C) If some of the sitting Limerick/Ennis AOs or HEOs get on the AP panel, will they be offered posts in locations they are prepared to take? There are perhaps about 10 of those presently competing in AP competitions, and there is no way of knowing how many of them will be successful.

As you can see, your fate is in the lap of the Gods really, and largely depends upon the advancement of the current incumbents. For example, if 3 local AOs make the next AP panel AND are offered jobs in locations they are prepared to take, it may open up opportunities for you. If the locals aren't successful, they stay where they are which obviously lessens your chances of being offered something in Limerick or Ennis.

All of this aside, I'd imagine that - if you were prepared to take a job as an AO in Dublin - you'd be practically a certainty to get a job at some point

    Hope this makes some sense?

    Thanks for the replies all.
I guess a big factor also is how many of the twenty ahead of me want Limerick or Ennis as first choices? If only a couple then I'm Quid's in?

Sorry had a stupid moment there, thinking of a different thread. Obviously it's Revenue.

Why don't you chat to PAS and ask their advice?

Whatever about Limerick, you'd do we'll to get Ennis - for some reason there's a ****load of Clare people in Revenue and they all have their names down for transfer to Ennis... but the right transfer may still open up a spot in Limerick for you!

From the 2012 AO panel I was offered Ennis and Limerick at various points in 2013. It really is pot luck

I forgot Kilrush has a fairly big office too so another possibility there.
Do you mind me asking where you were on the panel?
I have heard that the last panel hasn't been fully exhausted as yet.

    I was Top 10 in 2012 panel.

PSEU's Revenue Group Newsletter May 2014 had an update as to the numbers still on panels as at 01/04/14

AO 2012 Open Competition: 4 (panel expires 09/10/14)
AO 2013 Open Competition: 12 (panel expires 17/09/15)

So a max of 16 people are still waiting and get first right of refusal ahead of the 2014 panel

I thought the panel lasted only a year.

Confused on this, so even if you came 1st on the new panel there are still 16 people ahead of yeah?

Is there anyway of gauging chances of getting g a certain region cos Dublin has already been offered to some from the 2014 panel

Bear in mind though that there will be people on those panels who no longer (or never actually did) want the job, because they have been promoted, moved job, gotten a pay rise, emigrated, or got sense! No way of knowing what that number is.

There must also be a number of those people holding out for very specific location(s), and you can be sure it's not Dublin as they'll all have refused it by now. No way of knowing what that number is or where they are holding out for.

The answer to your question has to be no, unfortunately there's no way of gauging! Too many unknown variables... there might be no-one ahead of you for your ideal location or there might be a couple.
