If they were going to complain about Ronaldo I really wish they'd back up their opinions more. Zonal Marking has pointed out a few time in the last 6 months that a high number of goals conceded by Real and Portugal have come down Ronaldo's side as he leaves his full back exposed in 2v1 situations. Which is fair but it's clearly accepted by his managers, especially as he probably creates a lot more opportunities when the other team lose the ball and their right back is high up the pitch. Portugal don't have the quality of midfielders to spring him clear as often as Real Madrid do though.

For what it's worth I used to watch every Real Madrid game when Zidane was there and he never tracked back from that left midfield position either but he never got the amount of criticism Ronaldo gets for it.

Unfair point about Zidane really. Zidane was never as direct and not often did he end up in byline positions. He did a decent share of getting back, more than Ronaldo absolutely. Definitely used to get stuck in a lot more, hence his not so angelic disciplinary record.

    This.

The very best teams are playing what in effect is 2-4-4 in today's game

Or, if you include the DM in that, who is essentially a Sweeper moved further up the pitch, you have 3-4-3

I was shocked when I saw a picture of him two years ago. Had heard his voice for years without being able to put a face on it. He was the complete opposite of what I imagined he'd look like.

Fucking rubbish as usual from Eamon!

Still no Brian Kerr tonight. Seems like he hasn't co-commentated in ages. Unless he did Portugal vs Czech rep because I missed it.

He's stating his opinion that Germany don't have any standout stars or a talisman. I would be inclined to agree but then they have a very together team with several goal threats in the starting XI and on the bench eliminating the need for a "big" player. They emerged from a tough group with maximum points, Eamonn.

Dunphy says so many things that you'll have to specify the statement. :D

They embarrassed themselves last night .

Ha!! Embarrassed themselves. It's the RTE panel ffs. You don't watch it for insight. You watch it for the entertainment factor and once again, they delivered!

I don't find it remotely entertaining. Its trash television.

The funniest bit for me was ol Eamon talking like it was 4-0 at half time and that the Greeks would be just thinking about playing for pride!

    Muppet!

Did Ronnie Whelan have a bad holiday in Athens once? Really poor form from him, at least until I turned over to ITV.

Didi is being very patient with Eamon. and Bill is trying his best to stir it. I wonder where he hides that wooden spoon ;-)

He knows as well as the rest of us that Dunphy is trying to be deliberately controversial tbh

Barcelona fan boy Dunphy doesn't rate the German Real Madrid players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,431 ✭✭✭Felexicon

    Liam: For Munich

    Eamon: Whatever

How come you always use that term when its something to do with Barcelona?

i love dunphy but im disappointed in him tonight. his punditry has been vidictive with a clear anti german agenda and he has been quite rude to didi when he speaks

I like dunphy cause he's good craic but my god he's flinging some **** around that studio tonight.

He said before the game that Germany were overrated just so if the Greeks caused an upset or if Germany under performed he could say "I told you so, I know everything".

He's now trying to still justify his opinion and it's coming across awful tbh

He's not a positive commentator though, like Houghton everything should be better and they are champions of hindsight.

Dunphy is a clown with his comments re: Germany.
He doesn't rate Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Ozil (Dunphy says he goes missing in BIG games)
Dunphy you need to wake up and watch some football outside the Premiership

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,056 ✭✭✭applehunter

    Scraping the barrel tonight.

They have too much time to fill after games.

    I blame the producers.

Bit harsh. I think Didi ha been decent so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Jayob10

Dunphy is an idiot, praising the greek people, he really loves to champion himself as someone who stands up for the little guy, from the comfort of his VIP section in Lillies of course.

RTE need someone to challenge his views, its not even that hard he talks such nonsense.

Eamon is basing everything Germany do on Bayern failing to win the European Cup. Not only is he "phoning it in" when it comes to his analysis, he is being a bit nasty tonight.

The man knows damn all about football, usually he finds out what John Giles as to say and then he spouts the very same before referring across to john to "see what the senior analyst thinks".

He has disappeared up his own hole.
