He has shown plenty of bottle time and time again, players do have off days in front of goal, look at how poor Van Persie was v Denmark

Van Persie finished the season poorly enough, but Ronaldo was red hot all the way through. It's a very tough group and I didn't expect him to get Portugal out of it, but I'm shocked at his performance today.

Varela saves his bacon, great strike!

Can the word bottled be banned plz?

I think people are trying to say that he missed. Which he did.

Not really, Messi had a pretty bad penalty success rate recently (all season), does this mean he is a bottler?

Messi puts in the same performances against United/Barca etc as he does against crap teams. Ronaldo seldom, if ever looks as good against top teams as he does against poorer teams he destroys . . I can think of numerous games where ronaldo went missing (for madrid and United) when things got tough . .

Messi underperforms when he is in bad form. . Ronaldo has a tendancy to underperform in big pressure games . . Thats the differance . . Messi is on a differant planet to everybody in the world and that includes Ronaldo, Im saying that as a United fan who has no Ill will towards Ronaldo, I can just call it how it is . .

Nobody said Ronaldo was a bottler, they said he has bottled it several times in this match.

Kingshankly said he was a bottler, it was him I should have had a go at I apologize

He did bottle the chances yes.

Looks like his bacon has just been saved though

Jesus, did Ronaldo even go congratulate him?

Ronaldo never celebrated. Lay down in the penalty box.

No, no this is just wrong, and this is not the thread for me to get into with you

The notion that Messi runs riot v every team on planet earth everytime is ridiculous too in fact.

Im out of this debate though, no interest in having to walk you through the player histories.

Madrid derby this season got a hatrick after going one nil down to keep Real at the top of La Liga. Got the winning goal in El Classico to all but clench La Liga title. He delivers on the big stage, people just like having selective memory.

Gotta say, I enjoy the Euros more then the WC everytime, well at least up until the knock outs, the group games here have been very entertaining most of the time, cant say the same about the WC

Who said anything about Messi runnig riot in every game ?

The point was that Messi can put in a world class performance against anybody, not in every game but he consistantly shows up moreoften then not in the big stage. . Ronaldo more often then not does not put in world class performances. . People confuse his goalscoring statistics (hes a goal machine) with match performances . .

And dont bother getting into the discussion because you are clearly a fan of the kid. I think his statistics are phenomenal and that he is a world class player. I just think he goes missing regularly in big games , certainly in comparison to Messi . .

I agree.I think it is because of the different regions that some good teams from europe don't go and some of the poorer nations do,example New Zealand,Trinadad and Tobago,North Korea

Ronnie should probably suck that lad off in the dressing room after the game for saving his ass there!

Though he will still get torn a new one in the media/on fan boards anyway, maybe a hand job will do :)

Not to me but I'm going to answer out of boredom.

No, he's not. And Ronaldo isn't better than Messi. Two different players. Two phenomenal players.

This is like being back in school. WHO'S THE BESTEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD??

Just on Ronaldo, going on him in the international scene. Go and ask the majority of Portuguese folk and media. They are beyond frustrated with him for the national team, his performances so far aren't that much of a surprise. Still a game to go for them at least, but shame the odds were disappointing for him to not score at the Euros otherwise I'd have been on it.

I had heard that this has mellowed a bit?

Hopefully not as I want to see the two teams go hell for leather at each other :)

Ronaldo does perform against good teams, as does Messi but Messi is a different level to Ronnie

I don't think the armband suits him personally, his ego dictates that he wants the arm band, but I just don't think it suits him.

Messi didn't perform against Chelsea in the semis of the champions league. He hasn't scored in the last four El Classicos. Ronaldo has scored four in his last five.

EDIT: Sorry for going off topic i'm going to stop discussing Ronaldo/Messi thing! :)

How has he done against Barca since he joined Madrid ? How did he do in the CL semi finals agains Bayern ? He got a goal, scored a peno but was generally muck over the 200 mins and then missed the most important peno he took in the entire tie . . Would you say his performance was world class ?

I find it hilarious that people cant accept the obvious. . He doesnt play well in big games . . Hes a goal machine, but he never plays his best football in top games . .

If a person had only seen him in the Madrid v Barca games last season when he scored do you think they would say he was world class or a handy player ? Substitude that in any big game Messi plays well (and mightnt even score) and ask yourself the same question . .

goal scoring stats don't matter unless its Ronaldo who has had a barren period in big games

Messi was in poor form near the end of the season . . Judge him over the last 5 seasons and your argument doesnt hold up . .

And as I stated, people confuse matches in which ronaldo scores a goal, with him performing well . .

Fwiw, Ronaldo has 6 in 13 vs Madrid I think.

Surprised Holland have gone with the same front 4 v Germany, obviously they couldnt be so poor in front of goal, but you would not think they will get as many chances either.

    Cant wait for this one

Scoring a goal in a game proves you have performed aswell as you are capable of doing ? It proves, beyond doubt that you perform well in big games ? Very inciteful stuff . .

Think it will be more cagey than a lot of people think, and less entertaining than the one that has just finished.

Big game required from Van Persie. The usual levels of discord in the Dutch camp.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 941 ✭✭✭yomtea98

Holland to win 3-2. I think this will be one of the games of the tournament

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,300 ✭✭✭HazDanz

Nani showing great form today. I was really impressed. If portugal can get Nani and Ronaldo playing they have a chance of qualifying.

Fancy the dutch in the next game. RvP will be out for blood after one or two sitters the last day.
