Can anyone tell me "what's the fundamental principle of counting" ???

If one task can be done m ways, and the following task can be done n ways, then the first task, followed by the second task can de done m(n) ways.

and could someone help me with question 2 on 2011 sample paper..... I really don't get how to do probability....:(

we were told by our teacher that the "Trapezoidal Rule" wasn't on our course....please tell me this is true.....because its came up on the sample papers....

It's not. If you look at the top of that page it says its Strand 3 material NOT for examination in 2012

it doesn't confirm that on my papers but thank you :)

Is it true the maths paper 2 is supposed to be like the Sample sec 2012 paper?

All the sample papers are quite different or in different orders I can't tell what kind of stuff will come up or what questions to focus on the most.

SEC Sample 2012 is the only official Sample paper for us which means we should be working off that. But getting practice from the rest of them is good as well.

I was going for an A1 and I feel I probably got 90%+ in paper 1.

But I'm nervous about paper 2.

-The written questions on statistics never appealed to me. The answers are too vague and lack definite structure.

-No marking scheme for the 2012 sample? We have no idea how the questions will be marked so we don't know how to go about answering.

-Theorem/Construction/Enlargement/*Weird geometry thing* : I'm kindof confused about the question 5 on the paper. It's a stupid system to go by and the geometry/theorem question 5b in the sample paper wasn't even on our course. No doubt something like that would confuse people if they didn't know the higher level junior cert theorems.

I've heard they're going to be asking really abstract questions that we won't be prepared for. I guess it's good for people who want the LC to be about thinking and not preparing but it's unfair to the first year who didn't even get a sample marking scheme. -.-

To draw the centroid the graphical way you:
    1. bisect each line to get a midpoint of each line. Hope you know how to do that.
    2. You join the every midpoint to the opposite angle of that midpoint.
    3. Where they intersect is the midpoint.

Where they intersect is the centroid.* Or the center of gravity for that triangle.

Sorry yeah, my bad. If any of ye were in HL Maths then you might have done the experiment where you cut out a triangle from cardboard, find its centroid and balance it on your pen tip or something like that.

How do you input this into the calculator to calculate the standard deviation? I know how to do normal sets but not these with frequencies. I have Sharp EL-W531.
Or how would you go about doing it at all?

    P.S. Answer is 9.8488

EDIT: I got it. You just have to put in all 100 numbers yourself manually. Takes a while and you gotta be careful.

There's a way to do that on a Sharp without having to put in all the values.
Idk how but you can place the mean, the x values and f values and it would just do it all for you. I have yet to figure it out xD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭Darren.993

I got 35 for the mean and 9.8488 for the standard deviation.

There's actually a really easy way to do it on Casio calculators too.

Will the 5A be a definition we need to know with a choice between 5B being s theorem or construction.
All of the sample papers are quite different that I'm not sure what I actually need to know :S. The circle questions, slope, area and volume.
I'm fairly okay with those and some of the statistic things . I probably need to look in my book to remember how to do probability I remember some of them.

This paper 2 is fu**king stupid... They give us sample papers and don't give us the sample answers. YOU CAN'T MAKE MATHS FUN.

    this is what i have...

''if an operation has X possible outcomes and a second operation has a Y number of outcomes the total numer of possible outcomes is (X)(Y)...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 923 ✭✭✭biohaiid

Can anyone tell me what constructions we need to know for this year?
Is it just circumcirlcle, incircle and enlargements?
There's more in the book but I dont know if they're for next year or not.

I thought I'd be fine for this paper but revising now and I cant do a thing.
I can never get the theorem questions and haven't looked at statistics and probability yet :(

i think it basically means if one event AND another will happen, you multiply the probabilities (also called the AND rule)

and btw the OR rule means if one OR another event will happen, you add the probabilities.

at least that's how i've always learnt it!

    Trigonometry is so frustrating .
I can do half of it but some of them I haven't got a clue how to do.
I really hope I don't forget how to do them.
Some shapes they give you are really complicated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭Mayo_Boy

Let me get this straight. Do we actually need to know theorems, and if so which ones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭Mani09

Just remember "or" means add, and "and" means multiply in probability :-)

"the probability that the sun will shine tomorrow is 0.32.Hence the probability that it will rain tomorrow is 0.68"

    yes....no.....what.......

seriously what are we meant to say to this? is it really straight forward or is there some specific way of answering these type of questions?

    Q5 A/B you mean?

Don't really know what to expect tomorrow, we only got one proper sample paper with no answers!

Not good enough SEC.....Not good enough.

Ugh there's too much to doooo. And I have to re-learn about 5 Irish essays. Hmph.

I'm really getting stressed over this maths thing.
I can't do all of the trigonometry! and I need near enough 80-100 to pass with a good grade. I don't know all the definitions that we need to know either :s.

It's not on the syllabus anymore, don't worry! :)

Guys, i'm ok at Maths and am looking forward to tomorrow more than anything. It's not going to be a very hard paper. In fairness, Paper I was grand (definitely some bits were tricky to the weaker student) but it was the last time 'old style' Paper I was going to be examined, of course they were going to make it hard!

MARK MY WORDS, if you have NO idea how to do something tomorrow, make it up. Use common sense, read the question. The Government has pumped MILLIONS upon millions of euro/taxpayers money into this 'Project Maths'. Do you actually think they're going to let loads of people do terrible by giving a hard paper? No, they won't. It'll be a simple enough paper with more than likely an extremely generous marking scheme!

    Don't stress, you'll be fine!

Take it from PF, PF can help solve all your problems! :pac: Just take a deep breath when you get the paper and start on the most 'attractive' looking section (if that's possible :P) just think, by 12.00 pm tomorrow afternoon,

    NO MORE PROJECT MATHS!! :D

The answers are on this site! also shows you how to do them it only has the 2012 sec sample.

There's all these questions involving drawing triangles my teacher didn't even teach us that .. I do think it'll go better than paper 1. I just don't know what to expect.

You know the questions that are like "Firstly they worked out their individual ratios of height to arm span. What did it mean in each case , when the ratio was less than 1 or greater than 1 or equal to 1" this is from sample C pg 245

Does it mean that if the ratio were less they were less than the proportional body if it were equal they had a perfectly proportioned body and if it were greater it were more than the perfectly proportional body :S ?

Going through sample papers is wrecking my head, like would it have killed them to do some research on what's actually on the syllabus? And the basic structure is wrong for some of them because they don't include a choice for question 6, gaaah

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭Mayo_Boy

How do I work this out?

"A cone has radius r cm and vertical height K over pie cm (fraction).
If the volume of this cone is r^2 cm^3, find K. "

    Forgive me for being stupid
