Once a year at Christmas after training has wrapped up for the holidays our gym usually hold a sumo-wrestling night. We get a mat and giant sponge fat suits and compete for prizes (bottle of vodka, tshirts etc). Its always a great laugh.

There was another time, after the last show of the year was over, that we spent a free class doing all the flashy, ridiculous, over the top techniques that we would never actually do in a normal class, cartwheel kicks, 360 spinning jump kicks etc. I remember it being a lot of craic.

Anyone else do this type of thing from time to time just for fun?

The Sumo wrestling night sounds like a great idea. Im going to sugest this for my BJJ club this year.

My old Kung Fu club was based in Newpark Comprehensive for years. One Thursday night they had the big hall which we used for weapons training all set up for a gymnastic competition. We had great craic trying out the equipment - running up the runway, bouncing on the spring board and doing hand stands over the horse. Needless to say the Eastern Block Countries Olympic medals are safe as we were all crap :-)

We used to run a Christmas demonstration (Paul Moran still runs these now - YMAA Ireland) every year. All the parents would come along and our kids classes would all demo their kicks, self defence techniques, forms etc. and the Adults would do their bit too. Any monies raised from raffle tickets, entrance fees (usually a couple of euro) would be donated to Charity and then we would head over for Christams pints.
