Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is a draw really enough against Spain?

I can't see us getting a draw at all.

I honestly think we'll end up with no points, though I hope we get something off Italy as I need Spain to top the group.

All I want is a gutsy, battling performance now. Even if we lose. Bring back some pride to things and go out with our heads held high.

A win and a draw for us still and all is good, right?

Also.... has anybody else worked out if it is possible to qualify for the next round with only 3 points?

If croatia draw both remaining games, or win them, and we get 4 point we're through. 3 point wont under and circumstances anymore afaik

Not possible to get through with just 3 points as that would mean losing to either Spain or Italy, meaning they would have 4 points.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,735 ✭✭✭Vincent Vega

    hmm.
was trying to work out if any sequence of other teams drawing/losing would make 3 points sufficient.
I suppose it is probably a bit over optimistic, but if we can somehow nick a draw from the Spain match, i don't see why we can't go out and beat Italy on the day.
    Stranger things have happened.

Basically our best chance is Croatia sweep the group, and we manage to get 4 points somewhere.

Either that or two 0-0's for Ireland and then Croatia to beat Italy and Spain 3-0 each.

Just had an outlandish thought - 2 wins guarantee our progress! It's in our own hands!!!! lol :)

If it cheers people up at all there have been four instances of teams losing their opening game by 2 goals or more at the Euros and still qualifying for the next round (Czech Rep in 96 and Turkey & Russia & Italy in 2008).

I dont think Ireland can beat both Italy and Spain lucky if they get a draw with one of them, I'm afraid I think it is over for us :(

Immense display from De Rossi yesterday. MOM for me (Pirlo and Iniesta not far off).

  • Registered Users Posts: 96 ✭✭shano1888

Although we were outclassed in large spells I really wasnt all that impressed with Croatia last night and I think that on our day we would have gotten something from the game. I expect Italy to beat them on Thursday. If we could somehow manage a draw with Spain this would leave Spain on 2 points and therefore needing a win against the croats in the last round of matches. I think they would destroy Croatia in that situation.

We could then beat the italians who would have half of their team suspended for the final game. simples.

Would leave the group looking like so

    Spain 5
Ireland 4 (Go through on head to head rule)
    Italy 4
    Croatia 3

Sorry, but I can't stand this attitude. It's an attitude of accepting failure and it's held us back for years.

We need a point against Spain and 3 against Italy and a hell of a lot more luck than we got against Croatia in both games. Anything less is useless - including a gutsy performance where we lose.

I'm going to take the word gutsy to mean trying to string a few passes together.

I think it's just being realistic.

I think there is no hope of us getting 4 points from our last two games.

Probably not but it would be unreal to still have something to play for against Italy and we are allowed to hope.

Highly unlikely but not impossible. Besides who really cares. Let's not let lose sight of the fact that we're in a finals now and getting a chance to play two of the biggest teams in the world over the coming week. I'd rather be here and losing than the alternative that we've put up with for the last decade.

A lot of people seem to have lost interest simply because we put in a bad performance yesterday and we're unlikely to qualify now. These may be the last two games we get at this stage for another decade so let's enjoy them and who knows, we might cause a few surprises yet.

Agree. After Nigeria won their first two matches at WC 98, they had a reserve side against Paraguay, which screwed over Spain. Croatia could do the same.

    So nervous again.

Bit like I was on Saturday night.

Step one: Hope the bar the lads choose to watch the Italy-Croatia game isn't full by the time I ger off work and into town.

Step two: Hope we can hold the Spanish for the first 30 minutes.

Italy vs Croatia is huge. As good as Italy were in the opener, Croatia have put themselves in a strong position in the group, although difficult to access how good they were against us. Di Natale has to start imo, think he has the ability to expose Corluka at the back. Croatia's front two were ruthlessly clinical against us so the Italian back 3 will have their hands full trying to limit them opportunities.

Think we'll put in a decent performance and restore a bit of pride, but Spain will grind us down eventually and run out comfortable enough winners in the latter stages of the game. 2-0

ha, i really don't get Trap's love for Cox at all.

yes, he's always done ok for us, but you've Long whose a better finisher, whose quicker, whose better goalscorer, and who is higher up the pecking order at West Brom.

you've got Walters who is stronger, more skilful, and far more high level experience. plus he plays our way of playing all the time with Stoke.

it really is so so baffling, and is one of the great mysteries of Trap's reign IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭noodler

If we are never to have the ball in their third then Cox makes more sense than Long I guess..

He seems a more intellgient footballer in terms of possession, passing and build-up.

But really, I am making quite an effort to reach that conclusion.

It's being rumoured that we are playing 4-4-1-1.

    Given
    - O'Shea - Dunne - St Ledger - Ward
    - Duff - Andrews - Whelan - Cox
    McGeady
    Keane

I frequently bet against my own team, but never hope to win the bet.

That way if your team wins, fantastic. If they lose, at least you get some compensation.

I predict one of 2 outcomes.

4-0 to the Spains or 1-o to the Spains where we keep it tight, frustrate them but aren't able to survive the onslaught for 90 mins.

Either way, we're going home. Maybe it's for the best. Being the worst team in Europe isn't good for the countries rep especially as it's bad already with the bailout.

The worst team at the European Championships maybe but not Europe? I'd agree with your predictions but would plump with 1-0 Spain. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.
