Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have a feeling this is going to be the game where Torres turns it all around before going on to have a great 2012/2013 season.

No problems here. Fully expecting a loss. I'll only get excited if we're winning/drawing at 85mins.

    Table update

    Spain --- 4
    Croatia - 4
    Italy
    2
    Ireland - 0

Italy still looking likely to qualify. What's the story if Italy win and the other game ends as a draw?

Depends on what the draw is. 1-1 and it goes to goal difference, 2-2 or more and I think Spain and Croatia go through.

There will be shouts of conspiracy from the Italian camp if that game ends 2-2, true enough that would knock Italy out regardless of how they do against us.

Its happened before as well to them, 2004 when Denmark & Sweden played out a 2-2 in the last game.

One other thing to consider (even if Ireland can't qualify), if Ireland lose by 2 goals vs Italy they will hold the joint record for worst performance at a Euro finals (currently shared Yugo 84, Den 2000, Bulgaria 2004). If they lose by 3 or more they'll hold that distinction outright.

I actually think Ireland will be a lot more solid against Italy, have even had a couple of quid on the draw. Italy nervous, who knows. Bold prediction, Ireland, if they lose, will only lose by the odd goal.

    It'll end

    Spain --- 5
    Croatia - 5
    Italy
    5
    Ireland - 0

    you watch!

It is Italy's own fault if they don't make it out of the group - two games in a row where they took the lead and gave it away. You can't do that often at a big tournament.

They would be within the rules to play for a 0-0 draw, like Ireland did against Egypt in Italia '90 (and to some extent against Holland when they drew to knock Egypt out).

There are rules against underperforming, however I don't think anyone can make a rule saying that you have to attack and you have to abandon your own 3rd of the field (of course they made the backpass rule to prevent the Packie Bonnar style shenanigans back in the day ;)).

I hope Trap shakes things up a bit for the Italy games. There's nothing to lose at this stage, plus it would be interesting to see. I'm not holding my breath though.

Latest table going into the last 2 games of Group C. :(

    Team|Played|W|D|L|GF|GA|GD|Pts|
    Spain | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 5 | 1 | 4 | 4 |
    Croatia | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 4 |
    Italy | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
    Republic of Ireland | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 7 | −6 | 0|

Depending on the Croatia v Spain game we can ensure that Italy do not have a chance to go through.

The way I see it, Croatia (1) v Spain (3), Spain will have to much and will push for the win wanting to ensure they go through as group leaders.

This will leave Italy in with a chance and a win will put them through in 2nd place.

    Italy (2) v Ireland (0)

What odds on our group providing the finalists?

I reckon all 3 contenders are in with a shout, Spain as favourites, naturally, but Italy or Croatia could easily upset a team along the way.

Spain if they finsih top will play 2nd place in Frnace/England/Ukriane's group and Italy/Croatia will play the team that finishes top.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Croatia to shock Spain 1-0 with backs to the wall mugging, Italy to win 2-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭baalthor

From ESPN: The 2-2 draw, or higher scoring draw, would guarantee Spain and Croatia go through on head-to-head goals scored with Italy eliminated no matter what margin they beat Ireland by. Spain would top the group with Croatia in second.

At Euro 2004, the same fate befell Italy when a Denmark-Sweden draw of 2–2 or higher would eliminate Italy on goals scored in matches between the three sides regardless of Italy's result. Denmark and Sweden draw 2-2.

Would be funny (not for Italy) if the same thing happened this evening ....

One would feel sorry for Italy if this outcome happens again, but part of me feels these outcomes are also partly their own doing.

Interestingly the two 1-1's they've had so far they were leading 1-0 in both and in 2004 they were also winning another key game 1-0 until very late (their other draw was 0-0 so they didn't have the lead at any point).

Perhaps it's too ingrained in the Italian mentality, but I think they maybe should stop worshiping 1-0 so much and keep playing rather than trying see a game out and settling for what they've got (if indeed that is what is happening and I suspect it is).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,255 ✭✭✭Renn

In fairness they did keep playing/create a good few chances vs Spain and Croatia after scoring. Vs the latter they had 3 offside decisions go against them that were unfortunate and did try and grab a second. Doesn't help matters that Di Natale is not 100% fit and he has to rely on Balotelli for the goals :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,818 ✭✭✭swoody

Barzagli might be back into the fold having missed the first two games through injury. If he passes fit italy are likely to revert to a back four, allowing Daniele De Rossi to return to midfield. Di Natale will probably start alongside Antonio Cassano in place of Balotelli.

I think we're all so globalized nowadays every international team plays the same way, varying only with what players they have and the style of the coach/manager. The players play club football in different countries, the coaches copy the top teams in the world from the u-10 level. It used to be every country would have a different style, a kind of national identity. The organized Germans, the fast and passing Spanish, the long ball Celts/English, the entertaining South Americans, the 0-0 or 1-0 specialist Italians, the Dutch and their total football. It all came from a grassroots level and that's how it's all changing. Watch Brazil playing nowadays, they are just as boring as anyone else. Now it survives only as a myth, kind of sad in a way.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 311 ✭✭lempsipmax

Bill saying that a high scoring draw 2 all or higher would see Italy go out regardless of how many goals Italy score in beating Ireland... This would put everyone on five points so why would plus 10 goal difference not swing it for the Italians?
