Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Do explain.

basically the entire pedobear thing is a mickey take of the hysteria created around the whole thing. it's a blatantly not serious creation that, about any other topic, would be seen as a wind up. however given the subject matter it's associated with, it instead is taken to mean support of child rapists.

its satire intended to evoke responses just like yours

    that's the joke

Will I ask again? What "crusade"... some people find it funny. I don't. I don't understand the humour tbh and I think it actually is taken seriously by some people with a pervy eye for underage girls and I find that objectionable. Now where does the "crusade" come in?

The issue is not what I find funny or don't, I'm trying to understand exactly what aspect of paedophilia or paedophiles, or their techniques etc. other people find funny and why. I think the reactions are almost as intresting as the fact the question has not been answered.

Its funny because sometimes the best way to deal with horrible acts is to laugh at them. I can laugh at some jokes about abuse - depends on the joke, the context - and I say that as an abuse survivor. Sometimes you need to laugh at it or you will go mad. No one is saying that child abuse is trivial or funny.

Simple, I don't see how any aspect regarding the abuse of children could be funny, and I don't tell or laugh at that type of joke. That's what the OP is about. Perhaps now you'll answer my question, instead of trying the diversions.

Answer my question as to why you find those other kind of jokes funny? Then you'll get your answer.

    If you told:
A racist joke - do you really think the race it's aimed at thinks its funny?
A sexist joke - do you think the sex it's aimed at find it funny?
A joke at someone's expense - do you think the people it's aimed at finds it funny?
A joke about somebody (perhaps a celebrity)'s death - do you think their family finds it funny?

So, the point is that you, nor I nor anyone else here is a saint. We laugh at things we shouldn't? Why? Because we're human and we find it funny.

Why do I find Pedobear funny? It highlights the scaremongering that goes on in the world by the media and by everyone else.

    As an aside-
I was in the €2 shop a while back when there was this young girl in front of me, probably no older than 10. Her mother had obviously told her that she could pay for her own stuff and she was next in line, with the cashier calling her, but she wasn't paying attention as she was looking around, so I placed my hand on her shoulder to get her attention and told her she was next. That was it. When I left the shop, I began to think about how risky that had been. It could have been so easily turned around against me.

If I'm walking through a shopping centre and I see a child by themselves, one of my first instincts is to go up and ask if they're OK, especially if I see they're in distress; I've been that child, I think most have been that child and know it's not fun. But I stop myself, why? Because of the scaremongering that goes on.

    To quote Scroobius Pip:
"Thou shalt not think that any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that is not their own is a peadophile... Some people are just nice."

When I get emails of pictures of young girls that have been taken off facebook accounts and the likes with a photoshopped paedobear and a rating out of 10, then no I don't think the satire went over my head.

    there are 3 reasons i dont believe this;

    1) it seems very convenient given the conversation at hand
    2) it suggests that you are in the same social circles as pedophiles, since you are positive that the mails weren't sent with satire in mind
    3) it suggests that these pedophiles thought you might be interested in seeing it to begin with

Some people deal with their childhood abuse with laughter, everybody copes differently. Russell Brand is a good example of this.

Ah but sure it's only a joke, it's not "really" laughing at child abuse.. and as I said a 10 second google will get you plenty of examples of what I mean.

I don't find them funny, or jokes at other peoples expense, or jokes that put other people down, that's just me, it's not my sense of humour. That's why I'm asking.
Why do I find Pedobear funny? It highlights the scaremongering that goes on in the world by the media and by everyone else.

One in four people in Ireland experience sexual abuse. To my mind there's nothing funny about it, or the consequential damage/effects on society such as scaremongering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,255 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

The whole thread has gone completely off-topic anyway. The discussion is not about whether or not Pedo Bear is a suitable joke, because not everyone will agree on it.

What the thread is about, is the just how freaking stupid the media (and people) can be, and how easily they can over-react and jump to conclusions before doing any actual research.

The Pedo Bear page on Facebook has nothing to do with pedo's and even this segment from the article is complete wrong, and proves that they didn't not even visit the page before writing an enraged article
A new report claims pedophiles are now using Facebook to trade child pornography.

The WorldNetDaily report shows Facebook hosts more than a dozen child pornography groups and even more predator profiles

On the one hand I get the above, on the other I am told it's clearly paedophilic content.... so you take the very same material and interpret it two very different ways. Which is basically my point from the start.

Such jokes have to contain cleverness for me personally to find them funny, generally outrageous for outrageous' sake or being a dick (e.g. Frankie Boyle) doesn't do it for me.

I'd suggest that if you have to explain a joke in that kind of detail then it's not particularly effective or funny to begin with which is perhaps why I don't find the pedobear stuff funny at all, whereas I can laugh at other sketches on the same topic.

You could have to explain any joke though, depending on the audience.

Humour being a personal device and all that.
