I'm a coffee lover in a family of tea worshippers. Which means the coffee ground I buy for my French press usually goes off long before I get to the bottom of the packet.

What is the best (most economic) solution for a lone coffee drinker? Buy roasted beans? What kind of quantity do I need to buy them in and how long do they last? Do my own roasting? Buy a Nespresso machine?

Bear in mind I veer towards laziness.

you need a grinder, then you can buy roasted beans and grind to order.

you can buy bags of 250g, should keep for a few weeks anyway, probably a month if you store it in airtight container.

aeropress/kalita wave/hario v60/french press + hand grinder http://coffeeangel.com/product/hario-mini-mill-hand-grinder/ + fresh beans = cheapest. hand grinding takes time - so if you are particularly lazy you should pick up a good burr grinder: http://coffeeangel.com/product/baratza-encore/

Thanks to the tips on this forum I went and bought myself my first bag of bean yesterday (Confessa at the French Cafe in Limerick) and a grinder (Bodum electric unit) and today I had my first cup of real French press.

I have to say it was something of a revelation for me. I thought I had reached the pinnacle of coffee sophistication a few years ago when I started buying coffee grinds instead of instant. But how wrong I was.

The stuff in the supermarket with 'suitable for all machines' on the packaging I now realize is way too finely ground for the French press. I did a coarse grind on my first cup today and wow! No bitterness, even at the very bottom. And so much more taste and aroma.

I used to think I'd have to buy a Nespresso to get a satisfying experience at home, in the belief that it was only cappuccino that really appealed to me. But now I realize that a properly brewed cup at home can be just as satisfying.

    Thanks! :-)
