in one of the steps (think 16 or 17) they said they had to wait for images to confirm landing site of the descent stage. i take it said images will be coming from one of the orbiters??

Well the money used to bail out the banks could have been used to fund our own project to get a rover or probe or something on Venus? At least, that's what I'm half dreaming of. :o

Considering the altitude the skycrane bit deployed, it cant be that far away. Although I think it was meant to get as far away as possible from landing site after deployment, maybe curiosity's camera's will be able to see it.
Could probably take a spin over there if it wanted anyway.:)

All I kept thinking was, what if the bloody thing dropped onto the lander. Ouch.

Yeah, that would have been a right pain. Think they allowed for that to a huge extent though. Descent stage's job was basically to leggit as far as away as it could after deployment. Interesting times ahead. This stuff restores a bit my faith in humanity.

The press conference is only short of chanting U-S-A!

But in fairness it's deserved and in terms of science leadership probably true.

Bit Team America alright. Can't blame 'em.

True, but the last speaker just ended with "continuing America's leadership on Earth and the Universe"...

To be expected I guess after such an achievement, but that was a bit much!

there is a fair bit of 'this what we can achieve with the right funding congress' going on there as well i would say.

    No, they deserve it.

Should get some interesting discussion now that 'politicians' have gone.

The kids were asking me why I was getting do excited about this so I took them outside and showed them our car and told them to go figure how to launch it from earth and land it on Mars without breaking it!

Curiosity was launched on an Ares rocket, can't remember the exact model.

Too true, but try to explain what a rover is or any other space craft to our government lol they wouldn't have a clue what it all means the old farts will be gone soon and we will have younger scientists and brighter minds to progress us forward, hopefully.

I think the Russians (Tsiolkovsky) and Yanks (Goddard) had a hand - the Germans just scaled it up:) Then the Americans did what they do best - make it even bigger, noisier and rocketier!:D

Think they'll mention that the rocket was powered by a Russian built motor!

Tsiolkovsky and Goddard built the wheel, the Germans built the car. :D
