I'd sleep with anything for 625, but an examiner for 600.

I haven't formed enough of an emotional attachment to anyone in my school/life to warrant not reporting them for large scale cheating. Whispers or something I wouldn't really care about, but if someone had notes stuffed in the toilets or something. **** them, I'm reporting.

I've seen no cheating at all in our school during the leaving cert.

Yeah but they may be ruining someone else's life by forcing them out of their course.

There's a lot of mays and ifs involved in it. I think people should stop worrying about what other people do and just concentrate on themselves. If I don't get the course I want the only person I'm going to blame is myself, not somebody else who might of cheated.

I'd also care just as much if somebody was caught cheating though, as in I wouldn't at all.

Cause it's funny and entertaining. A light hearted touch is brought to a thread on the subject of a trivial first world problem. Oh no some student cheated gaining five whole points on me affecting my future education. Millions of people around the world would do anything to be at the stage of education you're at now. I despise snobby posts, live a little ffs.

I repeated and sat my second leaving outside of school so I was in a school that I had never been to before with people I didn't know.

When I went to school during all our important exams, (Christmas, Summer, Mocks etc), followed -what I know now to be- a variation of UCD rules(or stricter LC rules). There was no pencil cases on the tables, they could be spot checked, pockets had to be emptied when leaving or going to the toilet, rolling up your sleeves before going to the toilet etc., so nobody was under an illusions what was expected when they went into the leaving and didn't even try to cheat as they knew that they would be caught. However, when I went into the exams, for the second time, the amount of cheating was horrific, one guy actually answered a call from a phone that wasn't on silent DURING an exam (there's no telling what it was about, but the fact that there was no repercussions speaks for itself). I could never cheat, I thought about how easy it would be but felt so guilty afterwards, I'd be like a bag of nerves anytime the examiner even looked at me. I think it's so unfair that people are allowed to cheat and are actually being rewarded for it when they get their results. So much for the leaving cert being 'the great equalizer'

i'd feel guilty if i cheated, but i'd probably feel even more guilty if i ratted on someone, especially if they couldn't go to college or anything over it! someone said you should just think about yourself in this situation, but i think in this day and age people shouldn't just be thinking of themselves all the time!

I have a feeling you're both using social status in very different ways, and hence the cross purposes. One of you I think is talking about how someone would be viewed socially / in the eyes of his peers; the other about socioeconomic status.

This thread is slowly descending into a hellpit of sin and fornication.

Didn't notice any of the latter; what are you up to over there? :P

Poll added because theres many different views.

Really considering it because the guy really is the worst. Got all mock papers from neighbouring town and (only) got 555. Id hate to think hes taking the place of someone who does deserve it. Sure the system may/may not be fair but if everyone plays by the same rules is'nt it then a level playing field? Best team wins

I've heard of a few in my school but haven't seen them first hand, so it's not my place to say anythhing.
If I did I'd let them suffer themselves for their mistakes. One unreported cheater isn't gonna be a 'make or break' for wether I get into college or not.
I've put in the work, I'll reap the rewards some way or another.
    They haven't, they'll suffer somehow.

Btw, the Leaving Cert is not the end of the world.
Such a first world problem ..
(Not saying I don't care about it, but it's just a sad reality.)

Anyone that would even consider snitching on THEIR OWN PEER is an awful person... Think of the pressure someone might be under to even risk getting caught in a state examination... Are they not escorted to the toilets anyway?? Surely they wouldnt have the time to be learning off chapters!!?... And to think it would be great to see someone get caught by an examiner!!! You do realise you cant sit any state examination for years, if your caught dont you??! Most people wouldnt even do the leaving, thats wishing someone to mess up there lives....

The only argument pro-snitch is "well there stealing someones college place".. thats A) ONE person looking out for themselves, i doubt their out to help insure the genuine quality of exams... AND if someone was resorting to cheating, they would surely be in dire need of points... i doubt they would be competing for your precious college places...

Beat the cheaters by good form.. not by resorting to being an absolute SLIME!!!

If I saw someone cheating as an isolated incident I think I'd ignore it. But if it was going on for every exam like what the OP is saying I'd probably mention something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,818 ✭✭✭donvito99

Guy sitting beside me is on his phone all the time, its actually very distracting!

But I would never rat on him, in the same way that I would never cheat...

Absolute slime? They know the consequences. I know my own aptitude and have accepted some courses are out of my reach. I may even have to repeat to get anywhere but at least I'll know I ****ing earned it.

There's the OT thread, and indeed lots of threads where light-hearted comments within reason don't go amiss.

This topic tends to wind people up, and childish personal comments disguised as "jokes" are unlikely to help.

What are the penalties for cheating? Does that 10 year ban still apply?

If you saw cheaters in one of the first exams, you should have either confronted them, or place an anonymous note. And if they continue to cheat after that...

Or people are trying to keep things on topic. Its an interesting discussion, that has the potential to be ruined by childish name calling, so some order has to be kept.

There are other ways to get over the pressure that don't involve you being dishonest, and put yourself at an unfair advantage to all the honest people sitting the exam.

If everyone took your opinion, it would soon get around that no one will ever report a cheater and everyone would be at it. People tempted to cheat should know that they will be reported and the consequences that they should face. You can't defend the poor cheater who can't sit a state examination for years, that is the punishment that is set out.

And why wouldn't the honest person who has put in the work consistently and deserves the place put themselves first in this situation? And people "in dire need of points" could be looking for 600 or 200, and in either case, they are competing against others looking for 600 or 200. Its much more likely that their course is competitive if they are cheating.

I'm not sure how you would consider people reporting cheaters to be "slime", and not the cheaters themselves.

A proper A1 SLIME!! These are the people youve grown up alongside, Your friends, your peers... Yeah youll get where you want to go by earning it but not by backstabbing...
You earn nothing by failing your friends....

Well the LC inflicts so much stress on students, i mean for students who want to get 550+ points, its more than likely been all they have been working for all long. Due to the work they put in they would naturally enough be under more expectation to perform.

I can see where they are coming from. I wouldn't report anyone ever, I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
I mean that medicine student has worked so hard for his points, I would say he deserves them more than most people. Therefore I would let him get away with it, as if i would think that any student who wants to do medicine is a very intelligent being who should should be let cheat to a certain degree.

My Opinon. Lets not make this into a LC system discussion. This thread seems to be more about morality

I know this may come across in a bad way, but this is my opinion.

That is such bs, just because someone wants to do medicine doesn't mean they 'deserve' their points more than anyone else and it certainly doesn't mean that they would do better than other people in their exams in the first place.

I'd report them, it's not fair that they can freely cheat their way into college without repercussions while the rest of us work so hard. And I bet most of the people who cheat in the leaving spent the last 2 years doing f**k all work.

One of my friends seen a lad in our year cheat in his irish exam, ordinary level irish. He had a whole essay written on his haan only did 1 outta two that you had to do then just got up and left don't think he even looked a the titles :/ Why we wouldn't report it this lad left all his exams in less then and hour and I really don't think it would make a difference to his final results.
