Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If a tree falls in the woods and lands on a politician.......
I'm taking an estimation an awful lot of people here have lost belief in politicians and Irish politics, but what do we have faith in? This won't be a very scientific poll, but who do we believe is doing a good job and actually contributes something to Irish life rather than just looking after their own self-interests? Do any of our institutions? or am I being overly pessimistic by even asking? I've included the private sector here, not that it's expected to be socially motivated but is it functioning well? I'm trying for a state of the nation that isn't just the economy or politicians.

If a fat person falls in the woods and there's no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

I know that a lot of people believe in God but im looking particularly for social institutions here. I could have also included me, my friends and family, the goodness of humanity etc.

As the great philosopher/social thinker Tony Montana said, "I trust me."

Brilliant documentary made about him a few years ago.

Could the church option not be religion? I have faith in my religion which is not the RCC.

It's the church as social institution not in terms of personal belief, you could say i put in the gardai, why not the fire brigade? Im going for what would be generally accepted as a major social force. Why the RC church is accepted as, or is, a major social force in irish life above others is probably beyond this thread, sorry!

Apparently, if a tree falls in the woods and there's noone around to hear it, it makes no sound, just moves some air a bit as sound is the function of air movements pressing on an eardrum - without the eardrum there is no sound. Faith? err, not sure. Faith that they will do what exactly?

Pottler, what about a dog's eardrum, that part of it could go on forever! For your other question I just mean do we trust them, are they doing good, or trying to, or just me feiners?

I have pretty good faith in our education system.

We have one of the highest rates of literacy in the world at 99% and college enrollments are up year on year.

It's not all perfect, but I believe Irish children (and adults) are able to avail of a great education in this country.

So leaving a tape recorder to capture the sound won't work?

Always hated that tree falling thing.

I have faith in politics to represent us in all our dysfunctionality and incoherent inconsistencies. :-)

I have trust in the fact that the Church will do whatever it wants to further it's own agenda(s) at the expense of everyone else, does that count?

I actually have faith in the health system. Despite what some think, we do have great medical care here. (Boohoo, you had to wait 8 hours). If you can afford it, well thats a different story. I think people expect too much of it.

Having been in an accident recently my faith in the health system is an an all time high. The admin people are spectacularly bad but the front line people were amazing. Friendly, professional, efficient and busy as hell.

The gardai on the other had have been the most work-shy unprofessional, and at times quite thugish, collection of absolute wasters I've encountered personally(as in, first hand).
