What is the timing for the composing.and harmony questions would ye say..?:)

omg somebody please answer this!! :L
my timing failed me in the mocks for the composing. /: it took me sooo long to do the melody nice and neatly and then the harmony was a mess. :o
i think i spent 1 hr on the melody and 30 mins on the harmony. it was a disaster. had to rush both of them tbh. /: needed more time. O:
how long are you meant to spend on each?

Never really had any problem with timing before, I always get pieces done in under 30 mins, but like with a lot of things you need to leave yourself time to look back over what you've done because you will always find little mistakes. 35 mins for each piece should be grand, leaving you with 10 mins to check over each question :)

For the minor melody and harmony question , can we use the harmonic minor or do we have to use the melodic minor?

You can use either apparently. But I'd stick with melodic as it sounds nicer and less 'Eastern' (less Egyptian or Asian)

So for harmonic minor do you just sharpen the seventh .

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 colehface

My teacher always said spend 50 minutes on Q5 and then the rest on either Q1 OR Q3.
Wouldn't be suprised if they were both in the minor. :)
I've heard a tonne of teachers hint at Tchaikovsky for question one on the listening paper too!
Something on Sean O Riada will probably come up, but the questions are always so specific ;x

*Raise the seventh (i.e. if the 7th is already flat, then you naturalise it)

Yeah, harmonic minor is where you raise the 7th note a semitone.
So if it's already sharp, it becomes natural, etc.

Sorry chemhickey , so the only thing i will have to do with the notes in the minor harmony baseline , is raise the seventh note a semitone .
So there is no change to any other note

The chord of two is diminished so you are only able to use it in its first inversion position.
Chord six can only be used in its root position.
My teacher always recommended avoiding V7 if you have trouble understanding the whole raising the leading note a semitone.

    @ Bubbleope and leaveiton

Aaaand our teacher taught us none of that....fml.
Looks like it's going to be a busy night, but thank you so much, no wonder I had so much trouble during the mocks!
This will help quite a bit :D

Only raise it if you are ascending, and remember, the Leading note (7th note) must always rise to the tonic in Leaving cert music... It's just a little rule really. If you can, raise the 6th and then 7th (as 2 quavers) and then tonic on a full beat if it suits. It makes a nicer sound than just the raised seventh note eg. F G# A. doesn't sound as nice as F# G# A.

Then when falling from tonic, flatten/naaturalise the two notes.

So in A harmonic minor, it would be F G# A G# F (A tad egyptian as I already said)

A melodic minor F# G# A Gnatural Fnatural (more melodic as the name suggests)

Right I'm open to correction but I'm nearly sure
monophonic= one instrument playing a melody
Homophonic= two instruments playing the same melody
Polyphonic= two or more instruments playing different melodies

Once again, fairly sure that's right, could be wrong though :S

Homophonic is when you have a melody and an accompaniment.

I honestly dont care what comes up.
    Absolutely loathe music.
I just wanna pass, although even thats looking dodgy.
I read over bach, thcaikovsky and queen .. Not doing Barry, I just cant.
I read over Irish dances, Sean Nos, Fusion, North America, The Harp and Regional Styles.
And I know how to do a very basic melody and chords.
    That be it.

I hate Music too. I actually can't do any more tonight, I was so worked up about Economics this morning i've drained myself of all my energy. I'm going to get up at 4.30 tomorrow to cram, i've everything left to do basically! :/

Could somebody please tell me how to do a minor melody.
For example what to do for the A1 , B and A2 phrase.

I'm not sure what kind of structure you follow for your major melodies but minor melodies are pretty much the same except you don't have to modulate.

    I really wish I didn't do it now. :L
Its meant to be handy enough for points but I have such a profoundly stupid teacher, like no joke. She's useless.
It doesnt start til' 1:30 so you have plenty of time.
    I'd help but I honestly cant. :L
