Refund Question

I ordered a new TV on Thursday. Since then I have changed my mind about getting it. It is not due to be delivered for roughly another five weeks; is it likely that I would receive a full refund if I informed the store of my desire to cancel the order?

    Thanks in advance.

If you bought it in person then you have no legal entitlement to a refund for change of mind, regardless of whether or not the goods were actually shipped yet. If the shop has a stated policy of allowing you do that then that's fine if you are within those terms, otherwise it's entirely at the discretion of the retailer whether or not to accept the order cancellation. Some places might allow you shop credit instead.

The only other way to get a refund is if you bought it using distance selling (phone, fax, web, email) in which case you have 7 days from date of delivery during which you can return the goods for a full refund without giving any reason. You will have to pay the return charges and will be responsible for any loss/damage in transit.

That sounds ominous! I bought it in person.

Legally you have no entitlement but contact the store immediately. Be polite and explain your situation. Many stores would agree to a refund but it depends on what commitments they have made on the sale.

Really? u bought a TV with a 5 week delivery time? Is it some kind of highly specialised tv (i'm not being smart with you here)?

Why didnt you go to another store that had a similar model/spec in stock and get it there?

Some stores will allow a no questions refund within 28 days but you would have to bring it back to them.
    What store was it?
    Was delivery free?
Did you know you would have to wait 5 weeks when you paid?

Very specialised! The availability of this model is a major issue; it's only available through special order in most of the major electronics shops.

Have you contacted the store yet - as another day has now passed?

there-in is your biggest potential problem. The store have ordered it for you. Should they be allowed to return it to their distributor they will probably get charged a restocking fee which they will have to pass on to you. Generally restocking charges are in the region of about 10%

The earlier you speak to the store the better chance you have, however, you are coming from a position where by you are depending on the good will of the store and their distributor.

All things considered, I am more likely to go through with the order. All the replies here are very much appreciated.

Page 11 of the Sun today, Ben Dunnes column has pretty much copy and pasted the above as part of their "questions" segment. (by the way OP, your name is now Alan)
Not the first time Dunne's researchers have robbed from this thread.

    edit: apologies dudara, point taken.

And that is not relevant to this thread. If you want to raise this issue, then you can use the Feedback forum to do so.
