    Hi all,

Just wondering are there any specific guidelines on car parking for retail developments or in general. i.e. no. of spaces per sqft of building or per unit etc, as well as the number of disabled car parking spaces required?

refer to your local authority development plan.

You'll also find the size for the spaces in the development plan as this varies from county to county aswell

as a rule spaces need to be 2.4m by 4.8 for normal cars and 3.6 by 4.8 for disabled friendly cars. if the spaces are all in line ie like this -> HHHHH then the drive way must be minimum 6m wide.

if the spaces are angled like this -> HHHHH then the drive way can be one way and only 4.8m wide.

but again as advised above check with your local authority.

The develoment plan will give you guidance on the number and type of spaces required - you may also need bicycle spaces depending on the local authority.

If the site cannot accomodate the required number of spaces, there are a number of arguments which you may be able to make to the local authority allowing for the reduced provision i.e. existing parking provisions, dual usage etc. Agreeing this reduced provision will avoid / reduce the level of development contributions for carparking being charged by the local authority - saving the applicant money!

Depending on the development you can match the exact number of spots that were already existing.
