Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

1 coat of Chemical guys xxx hardcore wax greeted me with this this afternoon.
Much better beading this morning as it had just stopped raining, but I was in a rush to work.

Nope, there's no point once the car has just been washed and waxed etc. as like TP said, it'll be sure to rain soon again afterwards and the roads will be wet for the time being. Just drive it as normal and don't worry about it getting dirty, you'll wash it again in a week's time or whatever.

I've heard a few people say that they do this. The one thing to be really careful of here is that dust, dirt and airborne contaminants will be sitting on your car after a shower of rain. Drying a car after washing is a fairly safe operation with a good drying towel, mainly because you will have just given it a rinse off before drying. However, any little breeze, or gust of wind will bring with it dust and dirt which will sit on your cars paintwork. If it then starts raining and you dry it off, you will be dragging this dirt around the paintwork, undoing all your good work of polishing and waxing.

Happy enough to get some work done yesterday. For a complete and utter novice I was happy enough with beading this morning. Enough so to risk posting pics.

Did a fixer-upper job on my bonnet. Finished with polishing, sealing, and waxing.

Just wondering, with the surface in general on the car beading well, what would cause really large globules of water in the centre of the roof (actually slightly offset from centre as the car is parked on a slight sideways slope).

I'm more curious than anything, I don't aim to have perfect beading or anything!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,679 ✭✭✭MAJJ

Not an expert so two guesses/observations from my own polishing/waxing. Is the car roof high? Maybe hard to reach and not getting same application as other areas? Or I noticed on mine, the wiper spray and associated chemicals were overspraying onto roof.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

The globules are because of a lot of beads bonding together and since it's the middle of the roof, it's the flattest area so the beads just bond and stay there forming globules.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭Zoney

Thanks! Thought it might be to do with the flatness of the roof alright. Was earlier thinking of it getting less application of EGP but second last time I had a step to do roof, and last time I was careful to ensure even application. Screenwash a good point (hate the way it does that, just sprays up off the windshield again when going along full speed) but this is after a good wash and dry.

The screen wash will strip away the way wax on the car.

Not enough rain at this stage for proper beading, but there's an oil rig and a harland and wolff crane in the background... so that's something

large beads good or bad(on a flat levelish surface that was sitting overnight)?

More wax required!!!!! Good beads have small contact area with the car and are very high.

Here's one of my beading shots

Hmm that was with about 4 layers of extra gloss protection and 2 of colinite 845 on top of it(not all in the one go, they were applied over a period of a few weeks)!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

Yeah, as Ded_Z has said, they arent quite perfect...not the worst but not bad!

Also, sometimes you can have areas of large beads, on flat surfaces as there is nowhere for the beads to go, so it has to pool.

Take this for example; the roof on my car has a slight curve (as most do), and the car is parked on a slight slope, front of it lower....you can see the beads will run off the car. On the flatter surface the beads are good, but not heavy enough for gravity to take effect. A drop or two more water on each bead and it would slide off down the car.

Tell us about the prep that was done on the car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

When was the car last washed. A light layer of dust or pollen really effects the quality of beading.

It may also be a case of the two LSPs reacting badly together and the durability being compromised.

Was the car clayed before the was/sealant was applied?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,855 ✭✭✭nd

Well when doing the extra gloss protection I washed it using tbm, then clayed it, then washed it again using tbm. Dried it. Applied SRP first and removed. Then applied the layers of egp waiting about half an hour between.

A few weeks layer I said I'd try the colinite on top of it. So washed it again using tbh, dried and applied the layers of colinite.

I used the auoglym shampoo when washing.

Not that the "quality of beading" bothers me. Just curious :)

Did you clay it properly before applying all that? It may be possible that 845 doesn't work well with EGP.

I applied 1 coat of 845 on mine 2 weeks ago, washed twice since then, only dried afterwards, nothing else applied over it and my beads are still the same as the ones DZ posted.
