A rude awakening to the global economy for Qantas and the large part wider Australia. You cannot expect to have some of the highest paid labour in the world and continue to have services and manufacturing industries based in Australia that can compete with the rest of the world.

Why are wages so high? House prices of course! We have seen all this before!

Qantas were an excellent airline to fly on and the service was brilliant, the staff seemed genuinely good too. Time for the Australian government to protect this industry and use protectionism to safeguard Qantas. Emirates & Etihad need to be restricted and you cannot have a state owned money pit lossmaker set out to destroy a national icon and Qantas represents what is good about Australia. The race to the bottom like Ryanair will only result in the Australians cutting their own throats as we have seen with the race to bottom in this country.

So in summary we should use tax payers money and pay high airfares to subsidise the over paid, and underworked Qantas employees? You don't work for Aer Lingus do you?

I think this is a wind up to be fair. Protectionism is a throw back to the 1970's.
Union protectionism is one of the reasons why Qantas is in the state its in. It has legislation in its favour as well "The Qantas Sales Act", so the government is already do what you want it to.
The only thing going for Qantas at the moment is the brand and its frequent flyer program.

Ryanair is not an international carrier so to compare it to Qantas is apples and Oranges.

Its nothing like Ryanair and its far from being a race to the bottom. I've flown business class with Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, Etihad, Singapore, VA, Lufthansa - and Qantas are way behind the rest. They're stiffled by the unions, and are seriously fcuked unless they can do something about it.

They're being forced to fly uneconomic routes as it stands, they need to be cut free and made compete just like any other airline. If they go under, so be it.
