Separately, people are hogging the thread. Anyone (except the OP, kegzmc) who has posted 10 times or more in this thread, do not post again.

    donalg1 53
    durano 52
    The Mustard 20
    daltonmd 16
    mhge 15
    Graces7 12
    Damie 11
    Zamboni 11
    monkeybutter 10

surely mods trying to impose limits on the number of times someone posts in a thread is one step too far.
once a person isnt trolling or making any untowards comments, they should be allowed to make as many posts as they like.

while you are correct that as long as a user is not trolling or making untowards comments they should be able to post as often as htey want, this is a discussion forum after all, there are circumstances where a thread loses sight of the original purpose and instead becomes a battleground for the same set of posters on the same set of sides arguing the same arguments.

I've had a quick read through that thread (not every post i admit, but all of the first 70 and then randomly from there).

OP posted to ask a question. a contentious question.

Only some posters actually attemtped to answer the question. Some posted judgements on the OPs intentions and then went away. Others however, decided that this was the best place to argue a stance on the ethics behind the proposed action, the nature of the original poster and drew comparisons to others in vaguely similar positions. A group of posters then joined in to counter these speculation/accusations and by post 70 we're already completely ignoring the original topic and debating politics.

I dont know if the mod issued a request for the posters to get back on topic (havent gotten that far) but , in general, asking a group of posters to "take it elsewhere" is not a bad way to

a: avoid punishing users for discussing something interesting but off topic
b: ensure that if a thread is started then the posts remain on the OP subject and it doesnt just get lost in a shouting match over almost related ideas
c: stop a thread or forum from becoming a soapbox for a select few posters to preach their preferred message while ignoring what other users actually want to discuss

so no, imho, the mod has not gotten carried away. He hasnt banned those posters from posting in the forum, he hasnt told them they cant set up a thread of their own to continue the discussion, he's just pulled the thread back on topic by asking those most responsible for the divergence to stop posting in that particular thread
